Before the world was introduced to the drama and wonder of Storage Unit auctions through reality television, a couple friends and I decided we’d give it a shot. I learned about the whole process through a co-worker and thought “well why not”, it’s like the ultimate fleamarket. We won three auctions the first day we tried it, and found some valuable things in them.
One unit had silver coins stuffed in a dresser, over $600 worth, others had small collectables that were easy to sell on ebay or craigslist. It was fun looking thorough the units seeking the treasure that we had just purchased. We did make money, but…
What a pain in the ass that was. The units we bought had so much junk in them we had to rent a Uhaul to move it all. You only have a limited time to get the stuff out as the whole point of the auction is to open it up so the business can rent the space again. After hours of loading the truck, then driving it back to my garage, we had to unload it, sort it, throw out the junk, research sales prices, list the stuff for sale, meet people to pick it up and so on. I still have a garage full of furniture and dinnerware if anyone wants it.
The point is, with hard work and a plan you can make money at pretty much anything. Even if you don’t make money right away you’re gaining valuable knowledge that is worth 10x’s the price and time you pay for it. If we ever decided to buy storage unit’s at auction again, we’d probalby double our return and save half the time. Don’t be afraid of failure, come up with a plan, implement the plan and modify it as needed.
Domains don’t have to be transported in a uhaul, or stored in a garage, and they don’t get moldy. Learn as you go and embrace failure to become a better domainer, there’s isn’t a more valuable learning tool.
