The Bidder “First” Is Single Handedly Driving Up the NNNN.com Market 4994.com sells for $16,100 Today

It’s not often we get three 4N.coms up for sale on the same day anymore but today Namejet had some great numbers come up for auction and they did not disappoint.  Four numbers are in high demand but there is a more interesting story than just their prices.  If there is a four number dot com up for sale, there is a 99% chance that one account is going to buy it.  No matter what the cost. That is the bidder named first.  He/She/It bought all three today and it is a regular occurrence.   It’s gotten to the point that, if First isn’t bidding, I am not bidding either.  Because its rare.  Five number, four number.  It doesn’t matter.  First is there.  After watching this account over the last few years, I can comfortably say they are the largest numeric portfolio owner in the world.  Millions and millions spent on numerics.   And it has certainly paid off because prices are tenfold compared to where they were buying.

On the other side, if they choose to stop buying I feel the Namejet prices would be quite a bit lower.  Even 30% lower based on the drive up of prices in all the auctions I’ve followed.  I’ve always said the Chinese control the market.  I just didn’t think it would be one group from China.  If anyone wants to do a little homework and tell me exactly who they are and a little more info it would be great.  I know they are a Chinese buyer/company, I’m just too lazy and jealous to look it up.

  1. He is on multiple exchanges, and if it has a number on it, he has it backordered, and is not backing down.

Heavily financing his expansion into this space, I have seen him purchase up to 6N com.

  2. Quite a few 5N .coms on GD Auctions most active page as well. Another angle to the story may be why these are all expiring around the same time.

    1. Thanks Paul,

No doubt its curious. Anyone with any sense of the domain market would know that a 5N.com is now worth $100 to $2K right now. Silly to let any of them drop.

  3. Interesting to see that the ‘unlucky’ number 4, appears to have little, or no impact, on the overall prices lately?..

    1. Matt,
Or maybe it would have been more. The pattern of 4994 trumped the fact that it had a four in today’s case. If it would have been 5995 it would have been $25K IMO

  4. The number 4 does usually have a bad connotation, but depending how it is used, presented or even the location in China it is being used it can have other good meanings.

This is an excerpt from a travel site about Chinese culture:

“Four sounds like the pronunciation of “water” in Zhejiang area’s dialect, in which case it has neither the commendatory nor the derogatory meaning. While in the musical scale, Four is pronounced Fa, the same sound with 发 (fortune) in Chinese. Therefore some people regard 4 as the propitious and lucky number in this case and there is an old saying in Chinese – 四季发财 (be wealthy all the year round).”

  5. I have a few NNNNN.com and tested one on Flippa auction earlier this month, to see how the market is for 5N and to see how Flippa works. It had 9 watchers, 2 or 3 bidders and ended at $255. The numbers were 68625. You could still hand reg 5N like this 7 or 8 years ago, so the return for me was over %300 if you factor in renewal costs. It took a while but the demand is finally there and the prices fluctuate like you say, based on the numbers. Should have hand regged a boatload!
