Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Friday June 30th

Escrow.com

Barriers to entry.  I am a big fan.  My goal is to get into a business when the barriers to entry are low and hope that the barriers get much more difficult with time.  When we moved into the garden center and landscape business back in the 80s it wasn’t as tough. My Dad and I bought land pretty cheap.  $800 an acre and picked a spot outside of town.  Quite a few people were growing trees back then because land was pretty cheap and you could get $100 for a tree. Chain stores hadn’t gotten into the business.  Now you can get $200 wholesale for a tree but land is $15-20K. Because of the chain stores, you pretty much have to grow your own material to compete.  You need to be close to town and have lots of land.   We’re just one and a half miles outside the busy part of town.   To buy a garden center and land will cost you a few million now.  The barriers are very high to get into the business.  It worked out perfectly.

Domains are no different.  Back in the 90s,  early 2000s you had your choice of domains.  It was a matter of being able to have the confidence that this whole Internet thing was going to work out and knowing which names businesses would want to own.   Now many of those names are five and six figures.  Only the rich are now playing at the high end of the domain market.   There are tons of people playing the low end brandables market.   The financial barriers are small and those names are getting overbid as a result of so many that can spend between $0 and $200 on a name because of budget.   Another cause of increased prices is all the flush of cash for domain investors that have sold some of those older names, LLL.com and one worders.  They are trying to fill the portfolio back up and they are bidding up the price on the middle to top tier names. Add in the Chinese and prices are up.   All leading to some pretty big barriers for new investors.

But that is where I want to be.  I just want to be there before the big barriers came. And in domains I think I was.  I have a pretty good portfolio. Some of which I don’t think I could buy anymore.  My $10 purchases could be sold for $1000 at auction.  My $10K could be $25K.   You might say this is just assets rising in value. Not barriers.   But that’s what barriers are.  Things that stop outsiders from coming in and competing.  High prices can do that.  Domains are getting expensive.  There are still opportunities.  Some great opportunities.  They are just harder to find.  More expensive to find.  The risk reward is much much less than its ever been.  And I love it.   Here are today’s names. 1. lol .. Shane .. you are aware that despite what you say about liking barriers, you guys at DSAD are one of the biggest barrier breakers helping new domainers get into domaining. That’s because far more than money .. 2 actual bigger barriers by FAR are .. INFORMATION and TIME!
    .
The information you share helps new domainers get better quicker (Travis and Aaron’s posts showing what sold at what price and researching actual real-world end usage) .. thus helping newcomers learn how to find the better names faster .. in turn placing more demand on the better names .. in turn making them more expensive at auction.
    .
More importantly .. the time factor .. some of us invest more time than money into domaining in going through the lists a few hours each night. By posting your lists you’re helping people bypass that colossal barrier. Because let’s be honest, as I know at least you and Josh are fully aware because of your lists .. it takes a monstrous amount of commitment and energy to plow through all the domains night after night after night .. particularly if you have another job and regular real-world commitments.
    .
I can tell you I for one am completely burnt at times … and each time I see a really good name I was targeting on your or Josh’s lists that I was hoping would pass under the radar I want to bop you guys on the head! lol .. That being said .. I love/hate Josh even more than you and now almost dread Tuesdays and Saturdays because the colossal number of domains he shares have a huge affect on my auction day (both positively and negatively strangely enough)!
    .
So those of you who don’t do the hard work spending hours going through the lists .. you should be EXTREMELY grateful to the DSAD crew. Their lists are a HUGE effort in terms of the time they’ve invested that ultimately saves your time. Because time is a commodity more precious than money .. BY FAR!
    .
I can’t hate you guys too much though .. as I have learned from the information you share (and you seem like genuinely nice guys .. I wish you weren’t .. would make hating you easier .. lol) .. and while I do pay more for some domains, and even outright don’t get others because they move above my value-threshold … on the other end I have picked up a couple of names on your lists that I actually missed.
    .
I understand that you’re building a business though .. and building your brands which in turn actually helps you be more liquid and sell things for more because if you put something on auction you can promote it and essentially sell the exact same domain for at least as more or higher because of the time you’ve spent building you name/reputation. But you have to appreciate the irony that while you help yourself as a domainer on one side by getting more eyes on your names thus driving up the price .. you’re also hurting yourself with the other hand in getting more eyes on available name thus driving up the price. lol
    .
I think maybe it’s time you guys stop doing domains and start a Bitcoin Blog instead! lol 😉
    .
Anyhow … I still love you guys .. so much so that I think you should be taking more days off and vacations! 😉
