“Really Shane? Unacceptable post in a sales thread” I had a comment deleted at Namepros and this was the reason. It got me laughing. Evidently my snarky response on Namepros was unprofessional and I admit it probably was. I made a bid and the person said thank you but no thank you. They were in no hurry to sell the name. I responded with something along the lines that “Sorry, I thought the 140 bumps indicated you might be” Here was an email I got

However, it may be appropriate for you to create a new thread for your post instead”
Again, I’m not stating that my response was not wrong. It was a quick hit and out. But you think a search engine wants to see a thread with 40 bumps? And I am not exaggerating, it had 3 pages of bumps. If the person is not wanting to sell the name quickly I would think one, maybe two, pages of bumps would be enough to gauge interest. I also made a mistake of mentioning what he paid. Even though its public info I didn’t need to make it harder on him to sell the name. Again, all just a bunch of not thinking this was a public thread not an email exchange.
I’m not saying that my comments are right. It’s only that I have trouble sifting through all the bumps to get to the meat and I let my frustration come through in my response. I should be mature enough to go 2 or three pages deep into a thread, past all the bumps. Especially if I like the name. But evidently I’m not and I can’t. I’m working on it with my therapist right now. He got me past the non capitalized names at Godaddy. He’ll get me past the bumps at Namepros.

What actually brought me to my first domain 18 years ago was my DJ / Club Music community .. at it’s peak 15 years ago there were 35k+ members. So I can tell from first hand experience how tough it is to find the right balance between openness and freedom of expression .. and adding rules to make things more functional and friendly to as many people as possible. The reality is that it can never be perfect.
That being said .. I do find that sometimes they are a little aggressive with moving/closing .. or sometimes feel like they didn’t truly understand the post/thread before taking action. It is a huge forum though .. I think it has more to do with lack of time / human resources than maliciousness. That being said on my original that being said .. in this specific case .. you were clearly in the wrong .. bad Shane! lol
I’m pretty sure they could make a little “bump” hack .. just a little button at the bottom that shows up to the original poster after the allowed “bump time”. Pressing said button would effectively bump the thread without physically posting. That could have a couple of back-end technical issues but a much less back-end messy solution would simply for the button to automatically post a “Bump” .. and more importantly simultaneously deleting any previous “Bump”. I used to do little hacks on my old vB based forum all the time .. it’s been 15 years and they use xF .. but I doubt it would take more than few hours work for someone who knows their way around xF code/templates.
