To completely understand the Godaddy auctions and why the prices get to where they get, you have to understand the types of buyers you are competing against. The first buyer is the one looking for domains with age, backlinks, and traffic. Names that help build a history for their current names. They buy names that fit their category and buy them to link to their existing names. Or they will actually rebuild them out and use the history. Then there is your average domain investor looking to pick up names. No explanation there. Then there is Huge Domains and Buy Domains types who use an API and have programs set to buy a certain way. And they buy in bulk. You can see the auto bidding if you pay attention. They will run the price up and force you to pay a “fair” price for the name. They don’t know who you are. They are not there to make you pay more. They are merely there to get domains at prices they predetermined. And while much is predetermined there is no doubt there are API buyers out there that use the first bid as a marker. As soon as a domain gets a bid it often hits it immediately. You can wait until the end to bid or wait until it goes to closeout but its not going to matter. Remember it’s an API and is quick. There is no “catch them on a phone call and miss it” type scenarios. Its computerized. Understanding your competitors is the first step to success.

And finally. Take a look and tell me if you see anything that looks odd with Select.Auctions. I look over auctions every single day and there is just no way that every auction in pre-Release can get 10-13 bids. Doesn’t feel natural. They do a lot of advertising but that still wouldn’t lead to such similarities in number of bidders. Look at the names and tell me what you think. First of all .. today is the 13th (not the 12th) .. I’m guessing Shane is superstitious with Monday the 13th (far worse than Friday the 13th for those that do Monday to Friday I’d guess .. lol)?

Second .. I didn’t listen to today’s Sherpa yet .. but one of my favourite Sherpa quotes is from you when one of the other sherpa’s (not a regular I think) mentioned selling a double-hyphen-domain for at least high 5 figures … and you replied something like …
“Double-hyphen? Like an equal sign?” … I just died laughing out walking my dog … he must have thought I lost my mind. Seriously .. the info on those podcasts is great .. but it’s moments like that one which make it gold! You guys really should start your own podcast as well .. do it every second week on the weeks there is no sherpa review! 😉
Also .. I was actually going to start a discussion at NP about Select.Auctions at NJ. I’ve pretty much been sticking to GD as there is more than enough names there to take up all my free time .. but have had a few issues with them lately that inspired me to check out NJ .. and that very precise bidders range looked like total fraud to me. I read somewhere that sometimes you’ll see a domain with a bunch of $69 bidders so you’ll also bid without worry. Then all the other bids cancel at last minute leaving just you … which automatically assigns you as the winner (I think). If it looks like a fish and smells like a fish .. then something fishy is probably going on!? :-/
