If you run the daily domain auctions you are seeing something pretty obvious. There are less quality names than ever coming through. And private name sales are way down as well. You take away 5 main sellers and there would be virtually nothing private up for auction. That leaves the names that do come through going for much higher than they would otherwise. Which would lead you to one question. If that’s the case why is it not a good time to auction some names?
In my opinion it is. The reason people haven’t is twofold. One, they think the cost of acquiring a similar name is going to be higher than what they will make auctioning a name. That is probably true. Trying to buy a name privately right now is very tough. Domain investors have been pounding the owners of quality names for several years now. There are very few virgin names out there that haven’t already been contacted dozens of times. And what’s the point of purchasing the same type of name at auction as you just sold for the same price. Two, people pay less for private auctions than they do expiry. It makes zero sense to me but its a real fact. Buyers feel like a private name has been pushed to everyone on the Internet and the only reason its up for auction is nobody wanted it. In almost every case that is absolutely not true. But its human nature to not want someone’s leftovers.
All that being said, I can’t think of a better time to put you name up for auction. Especially at Namejet. There’s almost no inventory right now and if your name is decent at all it will get more attention that it would have had in the last few years. Add to that they are looking for inventory. So if you have some names I can’t see them turning many people down. I haven’t talked to Namejet about any of this. This is the opinion of a guy that runs inventory every single day. I look at it as much as anyone in the industry.
So if all this is true then why haven’t I put any names up for auction? The answer is simple. I haven’t needed the money and I’ve been too lazy to put together a list. That may change soon. I have a few names I want to buy and if I don’t sell a few names privately then I will raise some cash in the auctions. Hopefully I can break that record of super.com Here are today’s names. Still required to get accepted, and I’m pretty sure that they have a 15 name minimum in place. I would imagine they would make exceptions if the name was good enough, but I don’t know that for sure.

Thanks for your insight on listing at NJ at this point. Your timing is perfect. Ive had some decent sales there past couple of months and my listings have just ended last week. I should have gotten a list in this weekend but i will use one of the same excuses as yours, had a lazy weekend. Lol Trying to fight off bronchitis as well so that doesnt help too much.
But i will take your words here into account and make sure i get off my butt and enter some more domains now that you are thinking inventory has dried up recently. More eyes on our domains are always a very good thing.
