I got my hustle back. It just took a while. I didn’t have it most of 2017. If anything I was anti hustle. Not hustling in a day that is from 7:30 am to 9:00pm, 7 days a week is difficult but I managed to find out how to do it. I just went through the motions and got done the things that needed to be done. I considered last year a down year in the domain market and so I worked on a few personal development things and tried to pick up as much inventory as I could afford. I always stretch myself during the down times because that is when the best values are. But there was a problem.
I was on a 5 year burnout. Burned out from working too many hours, too many running miles, and the weight of my business relying on me to make good moves to keep the salaries rising. I knew things had to change because I was starting to not enjoy my day. I began to rely on money to make me happy. Even petty negative comments about me in the blogs started to bother me. That is not a good way to live IMO. I didn’t need to find myself, I know who I am for better or worse. I needed to erase some of the chalkboard in my head that was filled with routine and perception. That was my goal in 2017. I didn’t tell anyone this. I didn’t express it. But I was cognizant of what I was trying to do. I wanted to readjust why I work and get back my hustle.
It worked. I really just did my job and didn’t worry about results. I took lots of great trips. Talked to some great people. I listened a little more. I stopped being friends with people that were selfish and small. I tried harder to not be that selfish and small person (I still am some times). And even better I spent a lot of the domain money I was saving to find some good names. In short, I stopped sweating it and tried to think each day about what I wanted to do tomorrow, next month, and for the future. I have reduced my want of things. You will never hear me give a speech talk about filling up my jet. I may have a vacation home or a home in a warmer climate but my house will never be bigger than is needed for 3 people to live. I have only one toy I will buy. I have always wanted a Ferrari. That is my hall pass. The only ridiculous thing I will buy.
I want people to judge me by my word. My smile. My actions. My character. I really don’t care about what they think of my things. I will continue to put my face on what I do. They can judge me all day and they will be able to because I my name and my picture behind my mouth. They will see an old man killing it. I want to get faster and happier. The road there will be what it will be but I am now looking forward to it. And I’m looking forward to the Ferrari too.
On a side note I want to thank Richard for sharing his story of getting scammed. I am thankful he shared it because it is a great reminder of what can happen if you’re not careful. But I am like many and thinking “what in the Hell were you thinking”. There were not only red flags. They practically stuck a red flag up his ass and he kept moving forward. I’m glad it turned out as well as it did because he really set himself up to lose a lot of money. A big reminder. There are deals in this industry. Not steals. The only steals are when they steal your money or your domain. But kudos for sharing and being strong enough to admit his mistakes and let others learn from it. After a little more than a year of seriously “domaining” I’ve seen a lot of garbage in the forums. Even I’ve been getting some of my own negativity .. lol.

I think perticularly for you and other Sherpas it comes down to 2 things. 1- Certainly quite a bit of jealousy. 2- People expect industry “leaders” to be prefect.
.
Seriously .. first one is obvious. But anything even close to perfection is impossible in an industry that is so subjective and in all honesty .. dependent on a lot of random outside lucky factors. Fact of the matter is you can never know who the next end user is going to be. A good domainer will reduce bad decisions and can do many little things to increase their odds of success .. but there is never any guarantee on any domain .. it’s important people remember that.

So that being said .. I for one greatly appreciate that you and others share your OPINIONS. But I also realise that you are all human and that your opinions are not necessarily fact. Here at DSAD and particularly on Domain Sherpa, you guys (as well as Michael Cygar) regularly try to make sure that fact is clear .. but some haters just like to hate because they can. Seriously .. there are times when I disagreed with your opinions on some concepts or names .. but more often than anything else either I learned a new perspective, or if I disagreed, it simply reinforced my confidence in my own opinions because they were exposed to new arguments/facts that didn’t change my opinion (why it’s important not to live in a closed box).
.
More importantly .. what I see are people (yourself and others prominent in the industry) who give their time and energy and their personal advice in order to help both the industry and individuals. I’ve worked hard of the last year .. and I’ve put in the hours going through the lists .. but much of where I am today is thanks to DSAD (You, Josh, Aaron and Travis) as well as the Sherpas (colossal thanks to Michael Cyger .. and thanks to Andrew and Tess for bringing it back). Far more often than not your opinions are right on target .. but even when I don’t agree with them, your opinions still bring up new ideas and perspectives that help me.

People forget that you guys are human .. nobody’s opinions should be taken as facts .. more importantly .. if you copy somebody 100% then you’ll never find your own niche and you’ll never find unique tricks, shortcuts and views/perceptions important if you want to find hidden gems of domains that other people miss.

Ironically why I’m most appreciative to you .. is enhanced due to the fact that I walk my dog a ridiculous number of kilometers a week .. all the while listening to Domain Sherpa “reruns”. And while they are indeed highly helpful and informative .. more than anything else .. you’re damn funny and make me laugh at least a couple of times per episode. You made my journey into domaining enjoyable and fun! One of my all time favourite lines is in one of the Reviews with Adam Strong talk about a double hyphon domain he sold, and you quickly on the spot sarcastically asked him “Double hyphon like an equal sign?” .. it was a silly little comment .. but it was clever and witty and funny .. which more than anything else is why I’ve always enjoyed following you.

Also .. while many might not notice it, I certainly do. I go through over 5,000 names a day .. I definitely do not NEED to be here adding even more names .. lol. But I always enjoy reading what you guys write (doesn’t matter if it’s about domaining or not) .. but most importantly .. I love the comments and taglines for the individual domains .. especially when they are stupid, silly, and in no way helpful as a domainer .. lol. So sure you and the others have been helpful .. I’ve learned a lot and gained domainer confidence from all your opinions both when I think you’re right and when I think you’re wrong … but most importantly .. you not just make domaining fun .. but you make my life fun and you make me laugh .. which to me .. is something I’ll always appreciate far more than anything anyone could ever help me with in terms of domaining.

Anyhow .. thanks again to you, the DSAD crew, and other Sherpas, for both helping and making domaining more fun than it otherwise would have been! I am very appreciative of it.

FYI .. VilleNeuve actually means “New Town” in French. It’s also a popular last name. Denis Villeneuve was director for Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 (and is supposed to be doing Dune). Jacques Villeneuve was a popular F1 GrandPrix racecar driver .. son of Gilles Villeneuve who was also a popular F1 driver for Ferrari around the 70/80s .. he died in a racing accident long ago.

Jacques V actually opened a restaurant here in Montreal called “Newtown” there was a club in the basement as well.
