“9 out of 10 Olympians drank milk as a child”  That’s the slogan going on during the Olympics right now.  What they aren’t telling you is that 9 out of 10 Olympians aren’t drink milk anymore.  Let me give you some health advice opinions.  Drop milk and limit the rest of your dairy.

Two years ago I was running with a guy that was a four time High School state champion in distance running and ran for Auburn (boo) and Syracuse.  He told me that if I dropped drinking milk I would feel so much better during the day that it would improve my running.  It sounded a bit “out there” and I knew I had 10 more miles to run so I started asking questions.  His answer really boiled down to this.  There is not one animal in the entire world that drinks milk once its weened off its mother. Yes I know there is also not one animal that can shoot under a 100 in golf either but animals COULD go back to feed if they thought it necessary.  The fact is that milk is produced to grow a baby. To give it weight and strength when young.  It has trouble with other food and is a good form of nutrition when sucking is the only way to feed.    Once they can move away from the teet they do.

So why would a human still drink milk?  Misinformation.  We think its healthy even though all the nutrition in milk is readily available in lots of other foods. And those foods are packed with calories like milk is.  In a world of obese people, the last thing we need is more calories.  Three-fourths of the world’s population has lactose intolerance or cannot comfortably digest lactose, a sugar found in milk.   Most don’t even know it unless its severe.  The rest just think that is how they are supposed to feel all day.  And milk has a ton of calcium.  That’s great right?  Not exactly.  Calcium blocks the intake of iron leading to many women, especially young women, becoming anemic.

After hearing all this I switched my morning cow milk to almond milk.  There are a ton of different nut milks but I went through 10 different kinds and found one I loved.  I also limited my yoghurt to one a day.  Some times I ate more.  Cheese I have never eaten a ton of so I left it the same.  The result?  Amazing .  Instantly lost 5 pounds over the next few weeks.   My digesting was so much better.  It’s hard to describe without being blunt but I wasn’t as gassy and things moved though much cleaner.  In general my stomach health was better.  I am reminded of this because my wife used some milk to make something and asked me to drink the rest to get ride of it.  Took me three days to drink but my gut was rough for those three days.  I didn’t even think about it until after as I was trying to figure out what in the world was going on.  Then I thought about it.  Milk.

Take all this for what its worth.  If it helps let me know and I’ll tell you about dropping red meat.  Here are today’s names, Click on them for current price

  1. Few points on the dairy thing. Nothing wrong with dairy per se. Most people who have issue with it are on the lactose intolerance spectrum which apparently includes you and me. After a difficult workout, the best thing to replenish yourself with is bone broth or chocolate milk. Both have the ideal mix of protein, fat and carbs for rebuilding muscle, etc. Milk is great for growing babies for the same reason. Once I switched to lactose free milk, I’ve had no issues. As for almond milk, it’s the least nutritious of the “alt-milks”. One cup of almond milk has 2 almonds in it (I’ve mentioned this before on this blog). Minimal protein. Fact check this whole post with Google.

    1. Tony,

You are right on the money. Don’t doubt that is all true. I use Almond milk to deliver the cereal and fruit I eat with a little protein powder mixed it. If I could do it with water I would. Breakfast is my most important meal because I work out hard in the morning and I have to refuel to make it through the day. I look forward to that big bowl every morning. My favorite meal. Everyone can find a diet that works for them although the reality is most people don’t workout nor diet. The problem is it is more expensive than junk food. A big Costco container of non peanut mixed nuts is up to $16. I could go on forever (as I had a bacon egg and cheese biscuit from McDonalds this morning)
