1. How long is your hand messed up for? I was skeptical of these things but I bought one some years ago and it is pretty accurate – https://www.nuance.com/dragon/dragon-for-pc/home-edition.html , they have it for Mac too.

   This is one of my 5 destination sites a day and I am only here for the stories, so you better sort it out mate 🙂

   1. It’s going to be a while but I tried taking off the cast for an hour last night and typing and it went pretty well. Perfect night’s sleep and no pain in the morning. My Dad uses Dragon and likes it. I may try it just even if I can type.
      But don’t worry I have plenty of stories for better or worse

      1. You can just dictate the entire thing on your iphone, email it to yourself and copy and paste into the post. No need to buy anything else, and it works well.

2. Sorry to hear about your hand, its amazing how the body works, it can take a beating at times but one little thing can throw it off sync.

4. Those injuries are the worst. I want to get injured when I’m trying a bench press personal best. But no. Tying my shoelaces it is.

5. On your iphone, use “google docs, or even log into the site and open the post. Then dictate everything, the iphone dictation software is actually really accurate. Then go back to the computer and edit the mistakes, you won’t need to type much of anything and most of the dictation mistakes can be easily fixed.

6. I always tell myself I definitely should try using some form of voice to text .. never did though. I’m an online paranoidiac .. lol .. no webcam, no microphone, no cloud storage. Ironically I don’t really care too much about my actual identity .. my whois’s are public. I just use Ategy cause it’s what I wanted to use for my online presence (kinda like how Shane uses RocketDonkey .. under he gets nailed by the SPCA for “Ass Cruelty” .. lol), my real name was already taken. I have my first name in org .. mainly as an email .. but I’ve never fully moved to it because even I sometimes send emails to the .com when sending something to myself .. lol.

   Anyhow .. hope you’re feeling better soon Shane .. that kind of pain really sucks. Totally awakens you to how various parts of the body are interconnected. I remember a while back when I headbutted a truck while rollerblading how sometimes some of the issues with my back/neck would actually scare me that I was having a heart-attack because the pain felt like it was coming from my chest.

7. As for your domaining comments .. for the most part I’d have to agree.

   Although I guess everyone’s “startup” money can vary quite a bit depending on each person’s financial situation. When I started I most certainly was buying too much. I’m buying about a third of what I used to (and actually maybe 75-80% less in terms of $$ amounts I now spent) .. and I’ve made a few nice little 4-figure sales. All while not doing things as optimally as I should/could have been. So if I took out the last 6-9 months alone, I’m actually in the black … but I still need to pay back my “startup” learning costs so to speak. That being said .. I do also have a bunch of nice domains that didn’t have a year ago that I could easily liquidate for at least as much as I paid (only because I focus on far undervalued domains .. and part of their value isn’t just what I paid .. but the time I spent combing through auction lists to find solid names others missed).

   The irony is that I’m not sure if I’d be in the better position as a domainer today if I hadn’t made those original purchases which I would pass on and not buy today. Sometimes the best way of learning is by making mistakes. I guess it’s unrealistic to eliminate them completely, but obviously the trick is to limit them as much as possible.

   I think the best example of all is Drew Rosener (Media Options). According to his old Sherpa Interview, when he started he invested $300k into what he now considers bad domains. But I’m also thinking he certainly wouldn’t have made it to where he is today without making and learning from those original mistakes.

   I think the real thing people should do is set a startup budget .. and stick to it. Most importantly .. start very slow. Buy a couple of domains, then before buying any more, go to NamePros and ask for appraisals/feedback. Obviously not all opinions there will be accurate, but at least you’ll have something to work off of.

   Once you do hit your “startup” budget .. then I definitely agree people should stick to it (unless you’re super rich) .. more importantly .. keep on top of your domain management so that you actually know if you’re spending more or not. I’m pretty sure I’m now only using money from domain sales .. but not 100% sure (close enough not to be an issue at least) .. more or less still at about what I put in over the first 9 months. Eventually I’ll have to figure it all out for tax purposes .. but right now I’m still safely in the red (overall) enough to know I don’t need to worry about it .. lol .. but if trends continue like the last 6 instead of my first 9 months, then it’s more a question of time before I hit black. Over my recent vacation I also got vastly more organised .. which will lead to more sales because i’ll be listed at more places quicker as well as turnover some domains at smaller profits at wholesale (I truly need to trim my portfolio down to a more manageable size). So while I’d obviously love to make back all my startup capital ASAP .. I’m pretty confident it’s only a matter of time.

   All that to say I wish I had taken the advice sooner. While I did spent more than I originally intended .. it wasn’t unmanageable .. until a surprise outside non-domain financial issue came up and slapped me in the face out of nowhere .. looking back I admittedly stretched myself too thin. Because regardless if it’s domaining or bitcoin or even mutual funds .. you should also keep a nice fiscal “cash” buffer in case of emergencies.
