Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Thursday June 29th

Escrow.com

Adam Strong let me know yesterday he has five NNNN.coms up for sale.  1829.com, 3795.com, 4023.com, 4744.com, and 6574.com.   Like many of us he has things he wants to do and he might as well sell a few domains to do them.  He said he would give them to me for being such a great friend over the years but I reminded him he has kids he has to think about and their schooling.  (sarcasm).    Adam so politely sent me over an email he sent me in 2012 about selling those same domains at auction.  They were part of a larger list of domains and I told him that the rest were pretty bad but the numerics were going to do very well at auction.  His reserve ?  $500.    Obviously there are worth much more than that now and he was smart to have held on to them.  Instead of getting less than $10K, they are now worth well north of 100K.     Which also reminds me of when he and I were hunting for a NNN.com.   We were going to split it. We passed on a few at $20K and then chased them all the way up to $100K and never got one.  They got away from us just in the short year and a half we were trying to buy one.   A lot of lessons from Adam and I’s exploits over the years.    If you would like to make an offer on those names let me know and I’ll put you in touch.

***Disclaimer.  I was compensated to advertise this sale by Adam with a long…slow..hug

  1. Seems like your SnuggleBuddy.com squeezed the math out of you with his long .. slow .. hug! lol
    .
    1829.com + 3795.com + 4023.com + 4744.com + 6574.com = Five domains! 😉
    .
That being said though .. I just don’t get pricing of numerics beyond 3L. Sure I get that 4L has some appeal to Chinese and international businesses because numbers transcend language. But seriously who is going to remember 7164.com? Yes if it were significantly cheaper it might be worth it, but at the current prices I just don’t get it .. there are very few potential end users for whom the pricing would be worth the purchase!
    .
Congrats to those of you holding them though .. my comments have nothing to do with jealousy … despite the fact I am indeed jealous of you! 😉
    .
    PS .. Here’s a numeric for you … DSAD is # 1 !!! 😉
    .
PPS .. if nobody bids on TheNinjaGroup.com, I’ll go halfers with you on the $11 closeout price and we can start a covert group of ninjas going around stealing short numerics from the richest domainers!

    1. Ategy,

I have been hearing comments like this about their value for 10 years. Eventually they could be right. Good thing Adam didn’t listen. 🙂

      1. I just realised I typed “I don’t get numerics beyond 3L” .. but I obviously meant 3N .. and then 4N with regards to the China comments.
        .
I’m curious though .. you follow these more than most .. have short numerics (3N +4N) pretty much moved in tamdem with the 3L 2015 rise and 2016 softening?
        .
At this point I really don’t see any advantage for someone starting out putting all their domaining capital into these high priced “liquid domains”. Even liquid, the prices go up/down more than what I even buy most of my domains for, so the liquidity factor has no real relevance. I agree it might have at some point .. but at best I’d say 4N’s have a 50/50 chance of going up and down from here .. mainly because i just don’t see end user demand at the traditional markups from current “wholesale liquid” prices. What I think matters is the end user mark-up + likelyhood of selling. Where yes the dollar amount is interesting, but percentage isn’t .. and much more importantly, nor do I see the potential of the coveted “end user markup” sale as being very high .. which essentially means you’re playing the market on the wholesale liquidity margins .. which is a gamble (unless you feel strongly that the liquid price will likely go up even from current prices).
        .
I’m not saying the prices are at their potential ceiling .. I’m more saying I just don’t get the appeal of 4N domains enough to be confident enough to risk, and more importantly, tie up capital for what will likely be a 50/50 bet either way at this point.
        .
It is important for me to state that because my focus has been on growing my portfolio without spending $xxx, xxx, that I haven’t looked too deeply into these domains .. so take my opinions with a huge grain of salt! 😉

      2. Ategy,

You have to remember that there are all different kinds and values of portfolios. A million dollar portfolio in my opinion, should have some numerics. Not everyone is looking for a home run domain. Some are looking for domains that hold value with the possibility to increase. People said NNN.coms had gotten too high at $80K and then moved to $300K.

I think your method of domain investing is very risky. I think brandables should be a part of a portfolio but having a giant portfolio of made up, brandables and long tail is a great way to tie up a lot of money. Josh has proven me otherwise but he is very very good at picking names that sell. He has a higher sell through rate than most domain investors. I know this because I can compare him to all the other people at brand bucket.

In short, a balanced portfolio is important. Money management is important. I think names should only be purchased with sales. If it comes from outside sources I think you should have a budget and a limit. I like LLLL.com as value holders with the possibility of good returns. I like one word and two word dot coms because I think they are the most coveted names. I like brandables because of the risk/return ratio. there is no right or wrong in name choice. There is only profit or no profit which determines correct strategy.

I love your enthusiasm, your passion. But your strategy and style isn’t working until the sales start coming through.

You know the last thing you told me when I emailed you about these before I told you that I was selling :

    Shane :
“I would hold on to them. I think they continue to go higher. . . . .. the demand is still higher than the supply. But the return is fantastic and you have to cash in sometimes. Sell a few and keep a few ”

I just decided it’d be easier to sell them all. It’d save me on the thousands of emails I get a year too.
