Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Thursday March 2nd

Escrow.com

There is only one way to learn the value of a domain name.  Find out what domains sold and how much they sold for.  And then to hear the stories of how they did it.   If you talk about any kind of sale and don’t say the name or the price, save it.  You’re blowing in the wind and looking for a congrats.  Save that for Facebook.   The reason I like working with Michael Cyger is he delivers the story of the sale.  The different strategies that people use to sell names.  Incredibly valuable info. One piece of that info will likely help you sell a name some day.  Namebio, short names, our Godaddy report each day, DnJournal’s weekly sales list.  That stuff is gold.  Info that you can trust.  Mike Mann puts out great price data each day as well.  Who really cares about his holding cost.  He’s giving your free insight into the true value of a domain. Learn your product, learn the resale value.  It will give you a starting point for your asking price.   Here are today’s names.  Click the links for current price.  And make sure to come back the next day and look at Travis’ report on how much this all sold for.

Quote of the Day:  ” Relationships are like electricity.  Make the right connections and you will be empowered, make the wrong ones and you’re f’d ”

Domain of the Day: CloseTheBorders.com   Trump has the highest bid on this one right now

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. I Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by me, Shane . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything I say is based on my own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or my opinion is correct. I hand choose my names but I am paid to make this list by the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good

  1. “ArtificialIntelligence.co Only a few bid on this one despite being one of the hottest categories”

It is probably the reserve. I look at my Namejet auction reports list and 99% is did not sell reserve not met.

  2. Anthony,

Very good point. When people see a high reserve they don’t bother bidding. But that is a good thing because it saves everyone time. Flippa doesn’t show reserve so everyone is shooting in the dark

  3. Disagree. Just because a domain sold for a certain price doesn’t mean the next best substitute is automatically worth within same ballpark.

Domains are all as unique as their buyers. The value of a domain is only established once that exact domain sells.

You can have speculators that push the price of the domain up because of a comp. But if it’s not in end user hands than it could still sell for 80% lower than speculative buy.

  4. RP,

When you get down to it, yes every domain is unique and should be treated as such. And yes, prices can be drastically different based on the desire and pocketbooks of one owner versus another. But you have to start with some baseline and I can’t think of a better baseline than a name in length, similar category, industry, or niche. Its much better than pulling a price out of your ass which most people do. You can make up any price you want but knowing “sweet spots” and learning techniques to help sell domains is very valuable. So what do you use to determine price? Other than just make one up.

    1. I don’t know exactly how to value my domains my friend. I just know they have material value.

Tennis.com sold for $8M but was a business, clearly not a profitable business though. I own MyTennis.com amongst other sports domains. How much is MyTennis.com worth now? Probably more after the Tennis.com sale. But ultimately it is only worth what someone will pay for it.

I’m a long term domain investor, that is a domain I hand registered in February ’99. Obviously turned down many offers over past 18 years.

So my comment was more guided by that comp in my mind at the time. I don’t think that just because Tennis.com and its associated business sold for $8M that MyTennis.com is suddenly worth $1M or even $500K. Its worth what someone will pay for it when I choose to sell it.

I tend to buy domains in groups of genre because random domains seem like a harder long term sell, or more random to me. Just my preference. Think groups create more long term value for a potential business.

      1. Thanks RP for sharing. This would take hours to discuss even on the phone so the comment section is going to be rough to discuss. I appreciate the good conversation and I think we’re probably both right in many areas.
