Keep your day job. There is no reason why you can’t make a ton of money in domain investing and still work in the “regular” world. There is more than enough time to put in the hours necessary to find good domains, communicate, and do research. The only way I think you should do domain investing as a living is if you already made enough to quit your job. “I make a great living doing it full time” . That may be true but it a very low percentage of people that do and succeed. And even less of people that started doing it recently. Giving up the best years of your earning career is a mistake IMO. Again, if you make enough to “retire” to domain investing then all of this article can be disregarded. Otherwise. Make your money to pay your bills. Make yourself more valuable in your career. And make that fun money that you can keep rolling in domains. Hungry can drive but it can also force you into bad decisions.

I think we do talk about domain failures namely from everyone that does make money in domains. We all have stories about buying crazy shit in the beginning and losing money, but then taking that loss as a lesson and knowledge gained.

I would also suggest that 90% of the lists submitted to DomainSherpa over the past several years are good examples of domain failure learning lessons.

Talking about the failures over and over doesn’t really inspire anyone so naturally the positives are highlighted more than failures. Studying the fails can be just as beneficial, but sometimes the best learning is to fail yourself and learn. When someone offers knowledge or if you participate in something like DN Academy you’re taking steps to mitigate or reduce the failure learning curve.

Totally agree .. Sometimes I find myself super tired balancing everything .. not just real world + domaining .. but also the rest of life .. family/friends .. walking and playing with Steamie .. eating .. and something some people refer to as sleeping?

That being said .. anybody currently domaining without a real job .. if I was able to just start my whole worklife all over again .. then I’d focus on a job that allows me to domain while working. Although I 100% most certainly think Josh is a super smart and extremely hard working guy .. I don’t think it could be denied that at least part of his success is thanks in part to the fact that the bulk of his paid work time is spent on stand-by.

A kazillion years ago before my current job, I spent a summer working three x 12.5 hour overnight shifts a week in an incoming call center. It was a big company that had many many departments .. but the only reason they needed somebody at night was because they had a contract with AmEx to be open 24/7 to handle a specific sub-service for VIP clients. I’d get several calls from other departments the first couple of hours .. but then the rest of the night I’d get maybe 3-4 calls total (5 minutes each).

Back in those days the internet existed, but wasn’t really standard at workstations .. so while I did become a Jedi Master at Minesweeper, I wasn’t able to do anything online.

Takeaway .. if you really want to make a go of it at domaining .. then given the risks DEFINITELY keep a “real world” job .. but maybe look for an overnight security guard job in a big apartment building or something similar where 90% of your paid shift is sitting behind a desk (with an internet connection .. lol). I say this because last year I met someone doing exactly that .. and he was telling me how he was simply playing games all night … and I was like .. cool .. but if he actually used that time to further his side projects or education then it really could be a very smart job .. even if you’re making a little less than you could elsewhere .. I obviously thought how perfect a job that would be for domainers! 🙂
