Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday February 28th, 2018

Escrow.com

There is no other way to say it.  I am an idiot.  I know there are plenty of people at the other blogs and comment sections that agree with me. I’ve been called an idiot for years, but this time I proved it.  Remember when I said I was updating my prices at Afternic?  I did.  I checked them twice.   But when I uploaded my price sheet in a price I had a numeric squeezed in some other numerics.  Except this one was much much more valuable.   And within 3 hours of uploading my new price list it got bought and transferred away.    A name I just paid a lot of money for.  About $4K (it was part of a package) .  It sold for $500.  It’s 100% my fault but that made it no less upsetting.  The name was 90X.com.

Afternic couldn’t do anything about it.  They tried but we all knew it had no chance of being recovered. Aaron Johnson and Adam were so much help and really felt bad. The kid that answered the phone at Afternic?  Not so concerned or helpful.  “I’ll have to leave a message for my manager” he told me.  “Block the motherfucker before it gets away” I told him. “All I can do is leave a message for my manager” he said in no so many words.  I asked him if the manager would call me.  He said no, it would probably be an email.  Just want I wanted to hear.  He wouldn’t tell me but eventually I figured out it moved to eName and the only way it could be had back is if it were stolen or the buyer agreed to give it back.  Zero percent chance.  Again, its my mistake but its a scary mistake.   I have a security on my Godaddy account that they have to call me to move a name out.  It prevents people from stealing from me. All that is waived wen you have a BIN on Afternic. I knew that but I didn’t take it seriously enough. Turns out the easier way to steal domain names is break into your Afternic account, change a price lower and then fast track it to another registrar.   That way there is no SMS, no calling you, zero protection about moving things out.  This wasn’t stealing, this was my error, but I definitely see a weak link in my security.  And that is a free pass given to Afternic to send a name out immediately if a price is met.

Of course the first thing I did is get sick to my stomach. After that I checked all my names to make sure no others were bad.  Although I figured if they were they would all be gone.  I can’t imagine what would have happened if I would have screwed up my upload and messed up all the numbers.  I HIGHLY suggest you don’t upload a file and change.  That you do each name manually.  That you have a 3rd party check your prices to make sure things look good.  Afternic will do all this for you.  They offered to do it many times.  Even matching up their valuations to your prices to point out glaring differences.   They will make sure you get it right because of exactly what happened.   They know there are people like me that manually fuck things up like I did.

I’m not going to lie, it effected me all day.  It was a lot of money.   I also knew that I didn’t want to make it worse and make the day for everyone around me worse.  I called a few people to vent and talk it out.  Michael Cyger, Josh and Travis, and my wife.  That got me filling good enough to make it through work without barking at everyone and able to get stuff done.  Then I came home and meditated for 30 minutes. (probably should have medicated).  I meditate 10 minutes every day but I needed some extra time.  And then I ran.  I Forrest Gumped it and ran.  By the time I was done I was good.  It was over and we move on.  Lesson learned. Money gone.  And back to work.

I wouldn’t get all cocky and think you’re too smart to let that happen to you.  Keep thinking that.  I thought the same thing.  The reality is that anytime you give someone the right to take something of yours with no safety checks you are opening yourself to human error.   Unfortunately I was the one that provided the human error.   I just wish I was Web.com  Here are today’s names.    Click on them for current price

  1. A deal is a deal, you put a live contract your not network solutions that you could pull it back because you made an oopsie.

It sucks, but the Chinese are on it, and they got you.

  2. Good crying over losing $3500 man who brags about making all this money from this blog stocks nursery etc lol change the blog name to Domain Lame

    1. James,

I will always care about $3500 lost regardless of how much I have. Risk is part of my investment strategy. I just don’t usually add a giant dose of stupidity to it like I did in this case. I could have easily just eaten it and not posted it but its a good reminder for everyone. Not everyone is as smart and gifted as you. Oopsie and now Domain Lame? Again, not 5

    2. The man shared his mistake which he didn’t have to do. He shares his wins and his losses. Honesty is all you can ask of a blogger. Appreciate. Don’t hate.

And his reply to you was all class.

    3. James, It’s DSAD now dickhead, so Domain Lame doesn’t work, but DLAD would. Did you really laugh out loud thinking about your super funny joke? “Domain Lame”!!! BAHAHAHAH!!! Why don’t you focus on learning basic punctuation and sentence structure before delving into comedy. They DO speak English in the Western half of Canada right?

Tonight, after you put the cats to bed and jerk off to donkey porn, and after crying yourself to sleep doesn’t work, plan something productive to do tomorrow. I don’t think you’re fulfilling your full potential James. Reading and trolling domain blogs that you think are lame can be fun, but maybe you could find something more lucrative to do online. Then you too can “brag” about all the money you make and lose. We’ll still think your a douche, but at least you’ll have something worthwhile to talk about.

      1. .
Super busy with work and portfolio management that I haven’t commented much here lately .. but I feel the need to step in here .. Josh .. not sure how you can mock someone for their love of donkey porn when you’re likely the king of seal porn! lol 😉
        .
Sorry to hear about the mess up Shane .. totally sucks! It’s amazing how many times I’ve had domains be pulled back .. after all of them I’m not sure how they can actually justify not being able to do anything about it!? Hopefully the door isn’t 100% closed just yet! Good luck with it!

  3. “There is no other way to say it. I am an idiot. I know there are plenty of people at the other blogs and comment sections that agree with me. I’ve been called an idiot for years, but this time I proved it. ”

God bless you 🙂 You are so sincere and so funny man 🙂

  4. Ouch. Sorry to hear this and thank you for sharing. It emphasizes to many who don’t how quickly and effectively Afternic fast transfer works in any scenario. Also raises the question and concern why no 2/FA on all major marketplaces yet? Not that it would have made a difference in this situation but extra security layer just to log into marketplaces should be added.

  5. It’s crystal clear that Afternic needs to implement 2FA. It’s unfathomable that they haven’t done so yet. It’s the weak link in their whole ecosystem. (although I know it wouldn’t have fixed your problem in this case)

  6. Shane,
ProRunning.com and LetsRun.com (best of the two) are decent domains but IMO the category killer for that sector is…
    Runner.com 🙂

    Cheers

  7. Sorry to hear the loss of one of your quality domain which I remember you have shared very proudly of. Thanks for being very open as always and not many share their losses like you do.
Wish you recover this loss very soon.
    Best wishes!

    1. Thanks Abdul,

Nice offset to James’ comments I have a little chunk of Taser stock now known as Axon and they had great earnings yesterday that helped ease my pissed off state 🙂

  8. Sorry to hear about this. This is one of the things I really fear about using Afternic’s fast transfer. And Afternic’s terrible UI doesn’t make it any easier to control.

  9. I recommend my strategy of only buying names that are worth $249. I never sell lol
