DomainShane’s BIG LIST of Domain Auction Picks: Saturday, October 10th, 2015

So what have we learned this week ladies and gentleman?  We learned that there is a lot more that goes into being someone to follow, an expert, or someone to give money to than writing a blog or being in the public eye.  It takes a whole different level of trust if you are going to give them your money.  Just because you write a lot or are in a gang doesn’t make you an expert.   Look at their portfolio.   Talk to others that have bought or sold names.  Look at their businesses.  Do they even have a business?  Were they successful in another profession before they came into domain investing?  Did they have a good rep there? There are a lot of good writers, good speakers, great promoters. Remember how that whole Chef Patrick thing played out? Watching, reading and learning is great,  but you have to step up the due diligence when it comes to giving them money.  Everyone in this industry has made a few good sales here and there.  One great sale puts you on the map in this industry when it probably should be 5 good years.  Oh and is their portfolio is under privacy?  Because it sucks or because it’s porn?  Maybe they just don’t like all those offers that are too low.    These are all generalizations but you get my point.  I am not half the domain investor of Alan Dunn, Drew Rosener, or Eric Borgos.  I write because I figured I could share my journey on the way to being as good as them.  On that journey I’ve learned more than 90% of domain investors.  Heck I know the value of LLL.com better than Frank Schilling as proven last week on Domain Sherpa :).  But he’s pretty much got me in every other category.  My best skill is running a business of 40 people with millions of dollars in sales and doing it with consistency.  I know the in and outs of running a business from budgeting, insurance and workman’s comp, to cost control to marketing.  And I have gotten very good at it. When I set out to do something I do it for thousands of hours until I get good at it.  I’ve missed 8 days in the last five years of writing this list.  You would think after thousands of hours of writing this thing I  would have at least gotten decent at it. My business skills translate very well to a lot of things and domain investing is one of them.  My trading stocks background doesn’t hurt either.   All this isn’t to pump me vs others. It’s just to say that follow the people that ALLOW you to watch them. Don’t follow the people that NEED you to watch them.  I’m probably somewhere in the middle.
