We are in the Trophy culture. I watched HBO sports and they talked about all this and it reminded me of the conversation I have constantly with my family. We do not like the way society is now starting to raise people to think that effort and being better than someone else at something is wrong. I’m not one of those people that thinks that my generation is better than the new or how I was raised is better than how our kids generation is being raised. But I will say this. The next generation doesn’t know how to lose. They are rewarded for everything. Trophies for all, first or last, effort or not. The have no measurement of true success. They measure success in their life by likes from fake friends on Instagram and Facebook. The biggest positive of moving to a new school is a chance to add Instagram friends that will like their photos. By not acknowledging ordinary I am now labeled as cruel. By giving praise for effort and the hard work and not settling for “best they can” I am labeled a Tiger Dad. My daughter is chastised at school and practice for being a “Try Hard”, which evidently is now frowned upon. I just hope we don’t get to a point where just showing is good enough. It’s half the battle but once you’re there the second half begins. Sorry for the rant. Here is today’s list.

Shane, just wanted to comment on your opening line. I am in 100% agreement with the whole trophy generation culture. I’m glad that Real Sports did this show and I can see why it’s sweeping the nation, because the majority of young children don’t have good role models and apparently they either aren’t good at sporting activities or don’t understand you must try hard, as well as practice, practice, practice to get better. I see kids nowadays that have no clue that trophies and awards are only for winners or for distinguishing the best from the rest. I can tell you from my experience growing up, I wouldn’t even want a trophy for second place or for participating. I cringe when I hear other parents think it’s OK and good thing to award children for participating.
The scary part is that they don’t see the correlation between hard work and desire and how it relates to work ethic as an adult. Real Sports did a good job by bringing in psychologists to point out the fact that this is having a detrimental effect on young adults moving forward. They think that everything should be given to them just by showing up and don’t know how to process rejection and struggle with it.
Kids are simply younger adults and their actions at a young age will have a direct impact on how they transition into adults. Challenging kids and making them “earn it”, is the only way to help them develop and become successful adults. I’m thinking the parents who allow their children to be trophy kids are the same people who rarely challenge themselves in any situation and avoid situations that are formidable or demanding.

Thinking about this “problem” just hurts my brain. Thank you for the insight and speaking on topic about many of life issues. I may not always agree with you, but I find your thoughts and opinions ALWAYS get me to thinking (in a good way). It pays to consider all sides of an issue and then strive to be part of the solution rather than aggravate the problem!
I was actually having this conversation this weekend. The participation trophy just shows that you have to show up the get through life. Always expecting a pat on the back no matter what.
Not as bad as trophy hunting.
