DSAD.com: Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Sunday, August 21st

Escrow.com

I’ve promised to keep my problems with companies and people between myself and those people and I will continue to do so.  But one thing I have learned from running a business for the last 25 years is that most of the things that I thought failed because of others in hindsight turned out to be me.  In advertising I was set on what worked and what didn’t based on my experiences. I did a billboard and didn’t get much response and from that point on I thought billboards don’t work.  The truth is billboards do work.  But there is a proper way to do billboards to make them work.  Cluttered, no message, can’t give them a memorable way to make an action after they see it, things that lead to no sales.  After I started figuring out how to work with others and deliver a proper message, amazingly, things started to yield results.    In this particular case, in layman’s terms, this company owned giant signs placed around town that I could rent and try and get people to my business.  Sure they could have been more helpful in creating that message but after getting to know them, they say that most business owners think they know what they’re doing and dismiss everything that they tell them and over the years had concentrated more on being competitively priced than helping their customers present a board that worked.  A strategy that kept them with huge turnover on their boards.

It is no different with radio, television, and print.  There is an art to getting customers to take action or leave with your brand in their head.  An art that very few possess.  Yet most businesses dismiss the product rather than acknowledge their lack of ability to use the medium properly. Throw in the Internet and it become really challenging.  People flat out ignore banner and ads.  The click through rate is next to nothing at this point.  Take a small industry like ours and if you measure cost per click and base your decision on that you simply won’t advertise.  And many companies have tried a month with us and based their decision on those clicks.

When you see a domain blog do an article on a company that seems like it was paid for by the company,  don’t be upset.  It’s all we have.  If you want to continue to have domain blogs then support those articles. This in article advertising. Don’t be upset by them.  Without them you will have no blogs in today’s environment. Understand that in order to take the time to do these sites and have writers,  you have to have income.  We survive on our daily list affiliate money and a few advertisers.  It’s also why you can’t burn bridges.  There are only so many companies and so many people.  Cut off one and it makes it that much more difficult to survive.   We have four writers here now and it was tough for just Aaron and I to make it financially worth our time.  Now we need to make it worth Travis and Josh’s time.  So we are trying to come up with other sources of income.  We may be starting a newsletter brokerage company if that is something of interest.  We realize there are plenty of those out there but I think we can carve out a niche of domains that others may be skipping over.   Also thinking of having DSAD branded auctions at Namejet where we collate a group of names from our readers and have an auction each month or bi monthly.  I’m being open and honest merely so you can see what we’re trying to accomplish here and why we do things.  Some days its frustrating, some days its amazing.  But every day that we get better at our craft we get more of the latter. Here is today’s list. Click for current prices

  1. I think both expansion ideas are great. Especially pooling domains to sell on Namejet. I could imagine a lot of demand for that. Is anyone else doing that already?
