DSAD.com: Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Sunday, May 29th

Escrow.com

I probably represent 95% of the people in this industry when I get jealous of some of the amazing sales by other domainers.  When I see Michael Berkens selling a name for $30K that I can’t even get a bid for $1000.  But there are two key ingredients to the equation. One, a big portfolio.  Michael had tens of thousands of names .  Two, patience.  The only way to get $30K is to say no until you get it.  With small portfolio you could be waiting a long time to get offers on your 400 names.  But when you are deep you have more opportunity.  If you are selling 1% of your portfolio, that’s the difference between 4 names and 100s of names sold.  Of course a big portfolio has super high holding costs that require higher sales totals so there is some advantages and disadvantages.   While I will never get to 10,000 names, I have been more of a buyer than a seller and have been concentrating on regular income generation that helps to build the portfolio without the need to sell cheap.  Hoping the strategy leads towards waiting for the high prices I would like to get.  So far I have two great offers that I would have taken a few years ago.  I’m saying no thank you now.  We’ll know soon whether that it will be a lost sale or great sale.     Here are today’s names. 1. There are many domainers who hold huge number of domains than us but still have no ability/vision to see the actual value of the domain what Mike Berkens does and that’s what make him stand out from most of the domainers.

  2. Berkens no longer has a huge portfolio and still killing it. He’s still selling names for $80K like youcoin.com which is a 2016 purchase. So you can’t say if only I had a big portfolio and/or if only I started in 1995-2000, I’d be Berkens. He’s doing it with neither now. Berkens is one of a kind.

I used to think if I had lucked into domains in the 90’s, I’d be just as successful as Rick Schwartz. But that wouldn’t be true because I would most likely have cashed out for $50K/name instead of holding out for millions like Rick. Those guys are true geniuses.

Note: The “you” doesn’t refer to Shane but anyone not Berkens.

  3. I fully agree with your sentiment, Shane, and your analysis is spot-on, i.e., a massive portfolio enables those ‘home runs’ to happen.

For the rest of us, the best way to monetize the names in our portfolios (I’ve found) is to not sell at all, but, instead, do equity partnerships with emerging players in the relevant space.

Anyone who can enter into a few of those partnerships, leveraging category-defining names (and being sure to pick honest partners) won’t worry about having to sell names.

    Just my 2 cents…
