Back home from my travels out west. It was good to get out hike a little bit and see some of the nation’s national parks. I even bummed a ride to the Denver airport from our own Aaron. I’m the short fat guy in the pic. 
I thought I’d give my disclaimer again about my auction picks. I go through the lists and find names that when I look at them I envision a business using them, names that might park well, names that you might be able to sell to other investors, names that make me laugh when I see them, and any other random thing that might give them some value.
Sometimes a mediocre name is a good buy depending on the industry. For example drone, and VR names have been hot in the last couple of years and might sell to other investors. Being able to make money off the speculation that there will be a VR or drone store on every corner is great, but don’t forget that there are already businesses on every corner in every town that might need a name.
The next time you drive anywhere, just look around and take note of the businesses. Do they have a decent domain? Do they advertise at all? They probably do. What kind of crap domain did they register for their website? Can you sell them a better one? You don’t have to actually try and sell them a domain, but I think it’s a good exercise to get yourself thinking about names and brands that you might be able to sell. Every business that you pass could use and benefit from a good domain.
Will they spend 10K plus for a name? Probably not, but they will probably spend a couple thousand once they understand that value of a memorable brand.
And Finally… On the vast majority of these lists 99% of the names are expired auctions with a few names from private sellers, sellers that I have know idea who they are because I don’t look them up. Any others listed are names that people pay $10 to be promoted which is no secret as the terms for domain promotion are listed at the bottom of every page. The only links that are commissionable are the Godaddy domains. Every week I sell names to end-users that are the same caliber as the names listed.
I had to laugh about the post and the comments that were talked about the other day. I don’t hold names back so I can grab them up, the goal is to add value to the post so that the readership in turn sees that value. Obviously the more readers that like the posts and find value the better for the commission and for the companies that advertise on the site. I’ve added auctions from other sources that don’t pay to advertise, have no commission, but might add value to the reader.
The same is true for any site out there that wants to make money, some value needs to be added. If your sites sole business model is rehashing news that others have already published, or publishing “news” you received in an email, you’ll eventually need something more. Nothing gets more views and comments than an inflammatory opinion article. There’s nothing wrong with this business model or having an opinion, so long as your comfortable with yourself and comfortable looking like a douche. So I commend all the bloggers out there that have the necessary skills needed to re-spin already published news in a way that makes it look only minimally stolen, and I salute those bloggers and commentators that aren’t afraid to let their douche flag fly, it give us all something to talk about.

Hey Thanks Guys I appreciate it. Mark I took a look at your sites, and you have some great domains for sale. The logo’s add visual depth to the names, it’s a proven benefit. I have most of my names parked at DNS it would be awesome if you could add Logo’s to a parked landing page, generate revenue while giving the name a visual edge… Just sayin Frank.
