The other day Shane talked about they way we’re now doing the list. He talked about the value of different perspectives and how we all have different domaining styles. I do go deep into the lists like he said, looking for any value that I see, or name that strikes me as funny. Saving our readers time is one of the services that we try and offer. You can stop in to DSAD at some point during your day, find a name that you like and bid on it. That saves you the effort of going through the list yourself.
I go in depth on the lists so that I can extract every valuable name that I find on a given day. We’ve tried a couple of different approaches to doing the list, but the current way has been the best solution by far. If I tried to do an in depth list every day and add it to Shane’s, I’d have to quit my job, I wouldn’t have time to do anything else. That is where I see the value of our list, not everyone has the time to always look through the names.
If we don’t find all the best names in the expiring auctions, they’ll drop and then hugedomains will get them all. I seriously used to be able to hand catch a decent amount of good names everyday. Now Drop Catch gets them all. I still look through the pending delete list, but now I’ve shifted my goal to heading off any name with value in expiring auctions so it doesn’t reach pending delete. In fact if I search all of the expiring auction platforms, I have access to over half of the names that will end up on the pending delete list before they drop.
My approach is similar to huge and buy domains, and that is finding middle range names for the average internet user or business. Sure I’d love to get super premium names, but the biggest market segment of End User aftermarket buyers is going to be in the $1000-$5000 price range. That doesn’t mean I won’t price them higher or attempt bigger sales, but for me moving more names has been a better strategy.

True they do bid, but I think it’s more of an even playing field than going up against their drop catching power. I’m really referring to the names that make it through the auctions and then get backordered.
I acquired a short 3-word dotcom with a Snapnames backorder back in 2011. Sold it in 2012 for low $x,xxx. It was getting consistent type-in traffic and parking income every month and given what I know about the rarity of such names, I probably sold too low. The buyer just recently let it expire and I picked it up with a backorder at Dropcatch yesterday. It’s the type of name that doesn’t get backordered any more but I wasn’t going to bet against HugeDomains picking it up for themselves.
