DSAD.com: Shane’s Big List of Domain Auctions for Friday the 4th

Escrow.com

Most of the advertising I do locally is radio.  I choose radio because its one of the last markets that I can cover completely during certain times of the day.  The only TV anyone watches live anymore is local news and sports.  After that its splintered into 50 different cable stations and even then its taped.  Other than XM, I found that most people listened to the local radio on the way to work. And that guys in the trades listened to the radio all day in their trucks.  So I chose country radio for those guys and I advertise on pretty much every major radio station during the drive times. Its’ been amazing.

I only spend half of one percent of sales and my marketing kills.  My other secret is to use my own voice and the same intros and closing every time. When people here my voice they know its my nursery.  I also figure out something to push each ad that the competitors aren’t doing.  For Christmas I realized that nobody ties Christmas trees on cars or even loads them. They claim liability issues.  So I hammer it in the ad.  I talk about how we fresh cut the tree, bag it, and load it in or on your car.  You point to the tree and we do the rest.  Again, its worked very well.  They are coming out just because they can come in their work clothes and get a tree.  It’s taken me 20 years to figure out what I’m doing but I’m getting the hand of it and almost every station and other businesses in town come to talk to me about my strategy and what I think they should do.  Everyone but my competitors. 1. Interesting piece about the your nursery and local radio ads. There’s a nursery across the street from my office, helps paint the visual. Any liability issues from banding the trees to cars? Just curious what your liability has been. (Judging from what I see at this nursery, that business must be a huge undertaking.)

    1. Andrew,

The way I see it, there are always liability issues. But I feel much more comfortable if I tie the tree to their car. At least then I know it won’t scratch or fall off. If they tie it up and it falls and damages something, they are still going to sue me. Pretty much any way I get sued. I might as well make sure they leave here safe.

  2. Hello Shane,

I am back in Europe this Christmas and will be buying a real tree, I dont bother with a tree if I am in a hot country as it doesnt feel like Christmas anyway.

I am buying a real 13ft tree and having it delivered for about $300. The interesting thing, maybe from your POV, is that they come and collect the tree in January. I tend to live in and around cities and dispossing of a tree is a pain. You sound like you live in a very rural locatition, so tree disposal may be easier for your clients, but a tree collection service maybe something your clients would be interrested in too.

    Warm regards,

    Anthony

    1. Anthony,

We’re essentially rural. A town of 140,000 people counting students. But our city offers free tree pickup. Hard to compete with free 🙂

      1. Same here. I would be surprised if most cities in Europe didn’t do the same thing. Many cities pick up the trees for free, mulch them (along with all of the other tree branches and brush they pick up) and offer the mulch for free back to the residents.

    1. Eric,

We do the same thing but they plant it because most people in our town have yards. Larger cities don’t have that ability. But we do millions of dollars a year and they buy another one next year. And I don’t have to care for them all winter.

  3. I,m sure your commercial policy would pay for that, but I mean what A-hole would really try and sue you. I yeah we live in the US.

The tree falling off the car could be considered a falling object and covered under comprehensive. Unless that tree trunk came right at your window it should not cause that much damage. Of course if someone had to swerve to avoid the tree and plowed into a bus well that is a different story.

But not sure how much a tree could really damage a car unless it hit it just right. Run over the thing that would fun. A 1/2 inch pebble will do much more damage. That is like a bullet hitting your car. Either way a good commercial policy will cover these type of liability issues.
