I’m trying to figure out why someone would register BlockChain + 50% of all available English words, speculating on the future, and then let them all expire just when they start getting popular. Most of these names were created in 2013, so maybe they registered them all for 5 years?
It’s kinda funny in a tragic sort of way: They took a risk, spent all that money registering future Tech domains and got it right. Now Godaddy gets all the profit.
I think we’re getting a little ridiculous at this point with almost any domain with BlockChain in it are getting bids, some in the hundreds and thousands. I have talked about sales in this niche and have highlighted names available for reg fee, but when you pay hundreds of dollars for speculative long keyword domains your risk to reward, cost/benefit starts getting out of whack.
If we look at any other trending industry and the domains they use, we find that they’re more likely to use a keyword brandable or madeup brandable to establish their identity. So just be careful, make sure the name your paying a premium for in a hot niche is one that might actually be used by someone. If your paying Reg Fee, by all means roll the dice, who knows what these crazy people will buy.
On Tuesday Edward pointed out in the comments that the Domaintools sales banner was actually showing the auction price that was not up do date. I had assumed that since the link in the banner went to Afternic it was the list price before the name had expired. Nope, for some reason the links that should be going to Godaddy Auctions are going to a blank Afternic page. I’d be pissed if I were domaintools and not getting any commission.
Shane should be in Africa by now. It’s basically complete Anarchy here at DSAD, I can say and do whatever I want. Actually he’s never told me not to write something or negatively criticized any crazy thing I’ve said.
As Shane has said numerous times, we are a team. All four of us work on different aspects of the site and play to our strengths. We are able to help each other when needed and can bounce ideas off other team members whenever we want.
Every good team has a leader. Whether formally named, or the person with natural leadership abilities that others defer to, a leader is needed in any organization. Sometimes, it’s just for direction and vision, sometimes it’s needed for encouragement and accountability. Shane is our leader, and has proven his leadership ability over and over again. Shane mentioned yesterday that there are times when we’ve yelled at each other, It’s been years, but one attribute of effective leadership is being able to adapt, change as needed, embrace new ideas, and admit when you’re wrong. Shane is indeed an effective leader.
In my head that was funnier than it appears in print.
I’m really not kissing his ass, because I don’t need to. He won’t even be reading these for the next couple of weeks so it wouldn’t help anyway.
We’ll miss hanging out with him at Namescon, but there’s always next year, and I envy him and his Adventure.

I agree with you that not all of the names have tremendous value and price paid could limit ROI. That said- there are some gems as well!

Namepros can be a good place to find deals, but I would never expect to use it as a primary sales platform other than small flips or dumping inventory. Remember you should be trying to sell to end users not bargain hunting Domainers, or at least waiting on end users. If you need to burn inventory as a stop loss, it can be a good place to sell. Obviously not every name will sell to an end user. My point has been that higher than average amount of crypto names are selling to end users.
