Happy Independence day to those of you that celebrate America’s declaration to King George. If you don’t celebrate American independence, well then Happy 4th of July! Nothing wrong with being happy about July the 4th.

Several months ago we talked about names that non profits owned and let expire for one reason or another. I suggested that it is reasonable to sell the name back to that organization for a small fee that covers your time and effort.

Just to be clear, I said it was reasonable, not that you have to do it, we’re not judging you if you don’t. With that said, I think it helps the overall image of the domain industry when we are willing to work with people that aren’t as savvy as domain investors when it comes to the domain life cycle.

You could argue that the domain life cycle is convoluted and inconsistent and that showing grace to someone not familiar with said cycle, betters the general population’s opinion of “Squatters”.

For example, you investigate the domain life cycle before buying your name and find that you have several chances to save your domain should it expire. You’ll read that the name will go into a period of auto renew grace determined by the registrars fine print. Then you’ll be more confident with your domain purchase because you’ll have read that even after this grace period your name will go into a state called the redemption period, where you can pay an additional fee to get the name back.

This isn’t a judgment on the expired auction system that most registrars have in place, but simply to point out that it can be confusing for people, who have read about the “safeguard” ICANN put in place called “redemption”, later to find that their domain never made it to that safeguard and was sold in an auction.

My point in rehashing this old topic: A month or two ago I was approached by an individual through a whois lookup about the domain KidFest.us . The person identified himself as the previous owner, and said that he had run a site about an event for children. He stated that he had unintentionally let the domain expire and wondered if he could get it back.  I said “sure, no problem”. I didn’t just give it back to him, I offered him the name for $50 to cover my time and effort and he happily accepted the deal. A few weeks later he sent me a link to the newly constructed site.

So in summary, there is value in being  part of something bigger than yourself; something that fills a need, accomplishes a goal, or helps someone with something.  You don’t have to be a martyr and give it away, sometimes it just feels good to be reasonable.
