Escrow.com
If you ever want to know why production in the US and brick and mortar is dying, don’t look to the Internet. Look at your insurance companies. The amount of money I pay for Workers comp and health insurance is getting out of control and it gets worse every year. The latter I don’t have to pay, but I can’t have my employees without health insurance. I feel it’s something that everyone HAS to have. The positive is we have a fantastic health care system in our town. It’s meant to serve the surrounding communities and ours so it’s made to serve a million but we only have 150,000 in town. Our hospitals always make sure the town is taken care of. For instance, our entire nursery is getting vaccines today. I won’t argue where we should be in line but in our town we’re next. They’re vaccinating approx 1% of the pop per day and I think we’ll be at 30% in the next week or so. All that being said, the cost is incredible. Not the vaccine, but everything else. Workers Compensation I have to pay. It’s about 5% of payroll. Add in 6% matching for unemployment insurance. Matching their taxes. Add in the health insurance and even my starting wage of $15 an hour costs me $22 an hour plus. And that’s pretty expensive for a watering person. It’s millions of dollars for me in payroll and literally hundreds of thousands of dollars of insurance and adds ons I wasn’t paying before. I’m not complaining. I am happy to have a successful business. It also is a HUGE barrier to entry if someone wants to come and compete on the same level. I am fortunate to have the ability to scale up using the Internet and compete but they aren’t going to easily get a production facility going and produce to vertically integrate. Those costs have to get passed on and so far our customers are willing to pay for it. Because I produce most of my own product I can still grow it, add in all those costs, and still be cheaper than buying it in. Because the other growers have the same costs. Fortunately, we sell perishable items. Items that can’t be purchased overseas. Because if it could they would be crushing us since thiey don’t have all the costs we face. That’s what every other business is facing and I feel for them. They’ve been insuranced or pensioned out of business
