Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday, January 20th, 2021

Escrow.com
I love when domain investors shame people that can’t afford to spend six figures . They’re even harder on people that don’t understand that great names cost six figures. Meanwhile, most of them never having done anything other than buy low , sell for more, as a business model. The only reason they know what a budget is was because their customers said they had one. There are many brilliant people in our industry but I can’t say that many go on to build great businesses. Often, in the business world someone has a success and an exit and then goes on to create more businesses and have more success. Or they become venture capitalists and help younger businesses grow. Name the domain investors that took their wealth and did other great things? I can think of a few dozen. These dozen are at a great advantage. They have the business chops and started their business AFTER they found a great domain name. Most new companies starting up have a budget. Having 100K to build a business is a lot of money. But you can’t put it all into a name. I recommend 10% of your bankroll on a name. Just a number I use. Not sure what someone like Fred Wilson would say. The difference between me and so many business creators is I START with the domain name. I never have my heart set on anything. I know what I want it to exude and the length and that its a dot com. I then begin the hunt. I can get creative but not too creative. The key is being memorable. Easy to remember, easy to spell, rolls off the tongue. I use the example all the time. Sticker Mule. They could have gotten Stickers.com but I think Sticker Mule is much much better. It has personality. It’s memorable. And their money went into the business and not their name. Perfect. So while I do understand the value of a great name, I also realize that not all companies are ready to own that name. The domain is an asset that the company will always own but I prefer the company stay open and make some money first. It’s also why I will do runway payments. Let the first year or two be small and then ramp the monthly up as the company grows. If they go under, they give the name back. Kind of like a lease but with them feeling like they own it the whole time. So keep this in mind when you are selling someone a domain. It might not be right for them now. Treat them with kindness. Understand and explain that you know where they’re at and would love to work with them on payments or could be there later as they grow. You want companies to become super successful so they can pay that crazy price you’re asking for your domains.

  1. Agree completely.

I love domains as much as anyone, and I know the value as much as anyone – but you still need to execute.

Generics are amazing – they help with credibility with end users, business partners, advertisers etc. They let you start at second base. But if you are fat and slow you still aren’t going to score.

The list of generic domains that truly “own their category” with the domain AND business performance is actually very short.
