I’ve found that waiting for sales on a large part of my portfolio is uninspiring unless they roll in multiple times per day like they do for Josh. I decided to move some of my inventory through various auction houses just to have some action – to keep me interested and to keep things moving. Not everything sells, and that is OK. In fact, it just gives me more data. If a name gets no bids at multiple auction houses, then maybe it is time to drop it (not always, but maybe). Or, maybe it is time for me to lower my expectations with regards to price when listing the name with a buy it now. As long as I didn’t pay more than reg fee to a little more than reg fee for the name, I’m also making a nice profit even if I only average $69 or so (of course, I’m aiming to average more than that). Sure, it isn’t the 10x – 100x that we all crave, but it is 4x-5x. You could make almost $100K per year if you can figure out how to sell 5 reg fee names per day at that multiple, but that is no easy task.

Nice post Travis. You and I have the same thought process with this. Most of the names I sell I get in the $9-25 range and sell for $67-100 I’ve found. What really motivates me is getting the constant flow of sales. I’m trying to build up some more inventory now, but I’m being pretty picky with whatever I buy. I feel like if you purchase a name at $9 you should be able to sell it for at least close to that price when it’s coming up for renewal if you weren’t able to move it all year. There’s really not much downside outside of keeping up with all of the names and renewals in this type of strategy I feel like.
