So I’ve mentioned I’ve been building out BigIsland.org. I bought the name at a Godaddy auction because it used to be the visitors bureau official site and had an amazing link profile. I paid up for it but Sean Markey told me that it was as good as it gets if I wanted to build out a Big Island site. And I did. Sean put up a site that captured the main link and I wrote a couple articles.
Months later a fellow domain investor and builder named Pep Dekker approached me about building it out. He built out EstesPark.com and said he was doing well. After a lot of negotiation we came to agreement on price and he would handle the entire buildout. I was crushing it in crypto and seemed like a good use of profits. Thing seemed to be going well for a few months and then Pep vanished. He billed me for the month and then didn’t answer an email, text or contact on Estes Park. I thought he died. While I didn’t know him well at all it didn’t seem like something he would do. I looked through the Estes Park obituaries because I really did think something happened to him.
I called a friend who lived in the area to do a little recon on Pep. He was alive. Just ghosting me. Fortunately I had paid by credit card so I did my first chargeback I’ve ever done. He didn’t fight it of course. So contacted all the writers and paid them directly and kept them going. Actually gave them a raise because he was adding on a ton to the total. It took Pep 3 months to get back to me and say he was sorry. Had some “things” going on. No details, just that. Didn’t apologize for trying to take my money. Yesterday I found more
I was going to rewrite a section to change the focus of the article and I realized that only one of the Amazon links had MY link on it. The rest were to someone else’s account. I assumed I wasn’t making any affiliate money because the site was young. Only getting 500 visitors a week (but growing). Nope, I had a 5% chance of my link beting hit. I have no ideas the intent of those links but it wasn’t to make me money.
The story here is be careful who you work with. They could be the next Adam Dicker. Someone that seems nice, helpful at times, and doesn’t exude I’m going to run away with your money. I’m not saying Pep Dekker, he certainly could have some life events that took him away. He just did a terrible job of explaining what it was and made no efforts to make it right. Another lesson learned and it forced me to get involved. That involvement forced me to learn and I’ve really learned so much. To the point it was part of my decision to retire from the nursery. I think I can make a living from building. So I guess some good came out of it and that’s what I should focus on.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
