Domain Spotlight:

Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday, June 28th, 2023

If you have looked over the past year, you’ll notice that the DropCatch inventory is worsening. Not to say that they don’t catch some good names, but registrars are now personally auctioning off their drops or sending them to larger operators like GoDaddy to auction them off in return for revenue sharing. This leaves only the smallest registrars’ names in the dot com for DropCatch to catch. It was inevitable; they were giving away free money. Even the bad domains can fetch a couple of hundred dollars in the current market for expired domains.

In my opinion, some of those thousands of dollars will shift to smaller TLDs, but the same issue arises there. The larger alternative TLDs are keeping their drops, with the registry owners themselves handling it as in the case of dot ai. For dot xyz and dot io, people pay to allow them to sell their expired domains. Instead of a game of who has the most registrars and pings the hardest and fastest, we are now in a traditional bid for the rights to sell the expired domains. We already know who will win that—the largest platforms with the most eyeballs, who can command the highest prices. It’s not about who will sell for the lowest cut, but rather who will generate the most revenue from the domain sale for the registry or registrar that owns the rights to the expiration.

The domain business is evolving like all new tech evolves. Revenue sources dry up and new ones are formed. The one consistent is that domains are a valuable digital asset and continue to grow in value in many TLDs and companies and people will continue to farm that value out of them.
