It’s getting harder and harder to live in Illinois. First, the taxes are ridiculous. My property taxes are the second highest in the nation, and the monthly tax bill is now higher than my monthly payments were back when I had a mortgage. On top of that, everything else is being taxed now too; even moving cryptocurrency incurs a 0.2% tax.
Then there’s the weather. We get super hot temperatures in the summer and brutal cold during the winter. We also had 400 tornadoes, the most in the nation, and my roof and siding were completely destroyed by hail. I’m not saying other states don’t have their downsides, but I figure I can do better.
I won’t leave for a while because I want to be close to my mom, but I will get another house soon and start the transition. One thing I would miss is a great garden of perennials and flowers, but I’m sure I can have pretty flowers and a nice landscape in many other places.
I will say that despite the taxes, home prices in Central Illinois are pretty cheap. You can get a very nice home for $500K; they just tax it like a $2M home in most other states. Because of that, we will probably keep the house or downsize as we save for the final place—or at least the final house before the old folks’ home.

If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.* All names chosen by us. (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links.
