Today is the 250th anniversary of the US. I’m so old I vividly remember the 200th anniversary. It was a much bigger deal than this year. We had new quarters and the reintroduction of the $2 bill just for the bicentennial. As a young kid, it was so cool. In school, we decorated the entire building, and it was a week-long event. Everyone was so proud and patriotic.
The 250th has been overlooked by most because half the country hates the other half. People have wrongly lost their love for their country and chosen to overlook all the freedom and opportunity they have, simply because they don’t like the political party in office and/or pretend that they are suffering as a result.
Ask almost any other person in the world, and they will agree there is more opportunity in the US to improve your life and better your family than anywhere else on earth. There is a reason the entire world wants to come here for a better life, and has for over two centuries. The hatred and vigor against political opponents has clouded the reality of what we have. The focus and attention on our country’s faults overshadow the positives.
The world will continue to divide between the haves and the have-nots. I’m not talking financially. I am talking about the people who have the ability to become better people and create the life they dreamed of, and the have-nots, who will continue to choose rhetoric over action, using a victim mentality instead of championing positive actions for others to follow.
So, Happy 4th. I hope in time we learn to celebrate what we love and stop showcasing what we hate.
Quote of the Day: “The magic of America is that we are a work in progress. But you cannot improve a country you have taught yourself to despise. True patriotism requires acknowledging our faults while fiercely championing our unmatched opportunities.” — Arthur C. Brooks

Yeah, I remember the Bicentennial as well. And, yes it was much more patriotic. I think half the country still is – maybe more than ever, and wants to make it as good as it can be. The other half wants to destroy it, clearly. If the destroyers were to calm down a bit, so the others can work constructively, it would be so much easier.
But, tremendous progress is being made, and I am excited to see what the next few years will bring. It is essential that we make it work, if we are to have a safe and enjoyable place for our children and grandchildren to live.
