Domain Spotlight:

Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with data courtesy of NameBio.

Flips

Rankz.com sold for 2,150 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 605 USD on 2015-03-02 at Flippa. I feel like I’ve seen more of these ‘z’ domains lately. I don’t like them, but you can’t argue with around a 3x return after commission in two years.

TTTB.com sold for 3,900 USD recently at NameJet, vs 750 USD on 2011-01-10 at Sedo. I’ve said it many times on this weekly post….the value of LLLL.com has dropped since their peak around a year ago, but if you have been a long term holder of 4L’s, you’re likely sitting pretty.

YMLM.com sold for 3,300 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 126 USD on 2010-01-09 at GoDaddy.

DigitalAwards.com sold for 3,001 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 1,319 USD on 2014-01-16 at NameJet.

Flops

BuyShares.com sold for 15,100 USD recently at NameJet, vs 15,900 USD on 2015-04-12 at Flippa. A loss of over $3k after commission. I remember when this sold at Flippa, and I thought they overpaid….but I think the recent buyer at NameJet overpaid too. Just my opinion.

Astroturfing.com sold for 729 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 1,414 USD on 2016-01-09 at GoDaddy. I figured it was an obscure term related to artificial grass in a football stadium, but I googled it and learned a new term, “the practice of masking the sponsors of a message or organization (e.g., political, advertising, religious or public relations) to make it appear as though it originates from and is supported by a grassroots participant(s).”

FootballMagazine.com sold for 630 USD at Flippa, vs 2,500 USD on 2015-03-19 at Flippa. A loss around 75%.

Actually.org sold for 1,051 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 4,000 USD on 2012-09-26 at Sedo. Another business plan gone awry…..the truth isn’t always profitable. You can see a screenshot from the site back in 2013 below, and they described themselves as, “When lies go unchecked, we all lose. Actually.org spreads the truth, because the truth matters—even in politics. Our team calls ’em like they see ’em, and we hope you’ll support the truth by sharing Actually.org videos before Election Day.”

Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
