I had a decent day selling names wholesale on Dropcatch. I sold 39 names that were expiring for a total of about $2500. I probably would have renewed about half of them, but they were names that I didn’t mind cycling through.
While I’m happy with the outcome, I wonder how much they would have sold for had they been on par with Godaddy Expired inventory or DropCatch caught caught auctions. There’s defiantly a drawback to the label of private seller, like the inventory isn’t as fresh or something.
If I tried auctioning low end names at Godaddy, I’d be up against the valuation, a different starting price, a minimum commission payout, and not showing up in the expired data feed.
Which brings me back to my idea for Godaddy: Let my opt my inventory into the expired auctions when they expire. My names would be equal to their inventory, I wouldn’t be able to take them back but would have to let them go through the process. There would be no reserve and it would look just like any other expired name. I would then get the profit minus whatever commission is normal. As it stands I can’t even opt into a Godaddy auction if it’s too close to expiration.
Godaddy wouldn’t lose expired inventory because I would have to opt in the names. Every domainer would move names to Godaddy and the quality of the daily auctions would increase. They wouldn’t lose any of the high end stuff, assuming it’s not domainer owned or at least not a domainer that’s paying attention anyway.
For example there’s a few 4N’s on this weeks auction list. That’s 10K’s of $ of straight profit for Godaddy. The owner, domainer or not, wouldn’t have opted in to this concept because they’re already letting their valuable domains go down the Godaddy drain. However someone that owns a 4n might let it go through the process instead of auctioning on NameJet or somewhere else.
Maybe there’s a better way, but I just want a way to auction names that gets equal consideration and exposure as the rest of the registrar owned inventory. And yes I will continue to write about this from time to time, despite it being a unicorn.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good
Ok, now it makes sense. Yesterday was the first day I really noticed anything I liked on DropCatch from the private seller side. My partner and I picked up 7 of your cast offs. Good stuff – we felt we were getting better quality names cheaper than we would have at GoDaddy. But we only do the expired auctions at GoDaddy, so we wouldn’t have seen them if you listed them there. Which is why I like your idea about GoDaddy letting us put names in with the expired auctions. I have the same thought every time I’m deciding on whether to drop a name.
