I’m learning more and more about the value of social media handles. Our company acquired the Instagram handle @botany to go with Botany.com and in the two weeks we’ve owned it we’ve had five inquiries to buy it. 3 have opened with a direct message saying its for a hobby or school project, 2 said it was for their company. So its pretty much the exact same as domains.
Also similar to domains is that nobody responds after you tell them its not for sale. And its not. It is part of Botany.com and if they want the handle they have to buy the domain. I didn’t acquire it to resell. I bought it because I think social media is an important part of branding and having Twitter and Instagram exact matches only increases the value.
On a side note, you’ve heard I’ve become a big honey fan so I bought HoneyLife. com . Not really a premium name but a great brand for someone to sell honey. Looks good in print, lets people know exactly what the site is about, and passes the radio and spelling test. So I bought it. Another one I will probably never build out but its there if I want to. I do have the hives now so I am making product as we speak. Here are today’s names. Make sure to click on the names to see the current price and to help DSAD keep on keeping on

HoneyLife is a very nice name.
I’m a big honey fan myself. We had several hives on my family farm growing up and I’d love to start doing it again in the future.
As for the social media handles I’m wondering how do you get in touch with people or how do they contact you? What if there is no email listed on one you want? I don’t know of a whois for social handles haha. Are you putting an email or something in the description for business inquiries? This is all very interesting to me.
There are ways to contact them. A DM is a start. That is how people contact me. Tracking down people that own them is the skill. Nobody really wants to give up secrets. And again. I am not doing to resell. Only to acquire matching for my domains
I didn’t even think of DMs – duh!
I should have capitalized on this kind of thing back in the day. I made a lot of money off instagram as I got into marketing for it prior to FB buying it. I could have secured so many of the best handles.
The largest social media deal I have personally conducted is £6K for a twitter handle. This was completed through Escrow but I’m pretty sure they stopped dealing with these type of transactions. I am also pretty sure that buying a handle was against ToS at the time too.
There must be a fair few of these types of deals that happen, unreported. Annoyingly, there are swathes of names taken by people who are not using them, are uncontactable and who cannot lose them as they are not paying a yearly price. There is a very good market for Twitter monikers that are not being utilized by the company.
A Namejet for social media handles would clean up.
Anthony,
It is again TOS to buy and sell. But I don’t think acquiring for your business a matching handle would be or at least they wouldn’t enforce it. As I said above. I only buy matching handles. Never sold just a handle and won’t. These deals happen every day. And yes, so many incredible handles sit their idle but Twitter doesn’t care.
That’s the best/safest way to go about it in the end Shane.
I think there are ways to get idle handles by reaching out to twitter if its been over x amount of years of inactivity as it’s something I looked into and read about in the past.
