I’ve been reading Beneath a Scarlet Sky a historical novel based on a true story, written by Mark Sullivan. The book follows an Italian boy through his life during WWII in Italy, highlighting the great and brave things he did to save the lives of Jews and others being hunted down by the Nazi’s. Shortly after he turned 18 he found himself in a position to be the driver to a high ranking German general and was able to spy and pass important information on to the Allies.
Numerous times he would have died if one little thing had happened differently or one tiny detail was out of place. He was forced to witness horrific things all around him and had to learn to school his emotions and not do or say anything that would seem contrary.
While I’m reading this book I keep thinking how crazy life would be in this situation, and how I would never make it. I complain about stupid shit, we all do, so I can’t imagine the mental strength if would take to go through something like this and survive.
It makes me realize that we all can do better, that we have the potential to do better and be stronger mentally. I can make excuses for not doing something, say I’m busy, or think that I’ve done enough already, but it’s just an excuse for not disciplining myself.
