Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Thursday December 5th, 2019

Escrow.com

Uniregistry sent out a letter yesterday to select clients asking if they would be interested in being part of a program that let them have their expired domains go to auction where Uniregistry and the person that let them expire would split revenue. An idea that Josh aka Ike had and talked about for years. They key obviously is the split but we all know the psychology of the expired domain. Fresh names in thought whether they are or not. And if you were going to let it expire anyway you really have nothing to lose

There is a zero percent chance Godaddy is going to offer that. They make way too much money and will tell you to throw it in the auctions before it expires if you want to sell it. But as we all know, it gets treated differently and becomes almost impossible to find in the giant list of expiring names. If it got blended in with the other names it would probably perform better.

Speaking of Godaddy making money. How about CTX selling for over $130,000. Godaddy got to make the equivalent of a small home for doing nothing. A price that would pay a coder for AN ENTIRE YEAR to fix their bugs. One person, working 40 hours a week, for 45-50 weeks, working on making the site better. All paid for with one expired domain. I can’t think of a more profitable business model I’ve ever come across than the expired domain model.

  1. GoDaddy actually did a beta test of that around four years ago, I can’t remember what the exact split was but I remember it being very generous. It obviously didn’t work because they aren’t doing it any more, but I’m not privy to why it failed.

I’m guessing that they were hoping people would let decent names expire on purpose just to sell them, and consider GoDaddy’s split a commission. But that probably didn’t happen because you can’t set a reserve, and people are too scared to trust the market (plus rollback schemes). Besides, if you really want to sell a name, you don’t want to wait six months up to several years for it to expire. It’s easier to just list it on auction yourself. Sure, expired auctions do better, but time value of money and all that.

So if they are getting the same inventory out of it that they would have anyway (crap people were going to drop regardless of the revenue share), no point in giving the lion’s share (or any) to the registrant.

It won’t work for Uniregistry either.

    1. Uniregistry domainers are to smart to let good domains expire. The only ones that would are ones buyers bought, and forgot about, wonder why they want to move them to godaddy right away.

Uni if your listening you have bigger issues you are losing customers as their is a real disconnect with clients right. Is after wooing them over, you lost a lot of good brokers, customer service is subpar, many perks have been taken away, clients complain about additional cc processing fees, and you have taken away many management options within the platform. Also once clients leads go dormant you take ownership of their leads for life, can’t get them back.

Namesilo, and Epik have really been ramping up and taking a lot of your customers if your listening, reach out to your clients, as you have become very distant.

    2. Thanks Michael,

I had heard about it at Godaddy but wasn’t part so never knew if it was true or not. It makes no sense for them to do it. They don’t need
to attract new customers and it would only take away from revenue with no added gain. Uniregistry is grasping for whatever they can get. I wouldn’t call it a spiral at this point but their brake pads are definitely getting worn. That’s on Frank though. He made Domain Gang his marketing department

  2. At Fabulous.com, we have had an “Expiry Domains Program” for many years. It’s an opt in program for all customers, where we split the revenue of any domains sold via NameJet.

If anyone is interested, they can contact me directly.

      1. They appear in the NameJet inventory as “PreRelease” domains. Looking at the daily sale reports, it has been very successful for some domain investors enrolled in the program. It’s a great way to squeeze some extra dollars on those domains that you don’t intend on renewing.

Since being back in the Fabulous.com fold, I’ve seen some 4-figure sales go through the program too. Of course, it all comes down to inventory/types of domains. Performance varies from portfolio to portfolio.

  3. BTW, sa.tv looks good with a $99-500 reserve but the renewals look like they’re $300-600/year (remember there’s some weird system with .tv where some 2L .tvs are premium renewal and others aren’t.
