We don’t do this very often but if you’re in the domain space and would like to advertise with us here at DSAD we’d love to work with you. I think a lot of companies are still caught up in page views and number of eyeballs and not quality of leads. I would hope that advertisers understand that banners are pretty much useless in today’s market. Putting up a banner at any site might as well be made out of clear plexiglass. The only thing that truly works is articles of case use, success stories, and mentions. Even worse that banners are forced mentions. We all despise paid content and see right through it. The only way to help a company in this day in age is to show legit success stories. Describe why they are helpful and tell them your experiences. Influencers are generally influencers for a reason. People trust their opinion and enjoy what they have to say. I’m not going to say I or any of us at DSAD are influencers but I guarantee that we’ve built a reputation of writing how we see things and not as we’re told to see things.

Enough with the pandering to new advertisers. Let’s discuss the value of Godaddy’s reputation. Travis and I have been discussing the value of having a customer purchase a name through Godaddy. We know that having your name in front of customers during a search for a name at Godaddy is the most important thing you can do for the sale of your domain. We can leave that on the table. But what if they type in your name? Do you think that having that land on a BIN page at Godaddy makes them still feel like they are buying from Godaddy? We both feel that Afternic has no advantage in customer assurance. Nobody knows who Afternic is. But they know Godaddy. It costs 20% if they buy off a Godaddy page. Will you sell more names because people trust GD and will that offset the 20%?

It’s the kind of discussion we’ve been having lately. Where do we send our customers to make them feel the most comfortable to purchase a name. What is the balance between cost and assurance? We know what has worked for people but what would be ideal. For example, Escrow on Efty has made it easier. Escrow in our industry is the ultimate in trust IMO. But outsiders may not know this. I’m not sure exactly what is best but would love to hear what others think.

  1. This is a good question indeed. I have been trying all the alternatives but could not come to a conclusion. Afternic has no advantage for sure. Almost %99 does not know Afternic and interestingly GoDaddy does not show it owns Afternic which could have a impact on buyers. GoDaddy seems the best option but even Godaddy is not know by masses in many countries like mine. So does Escrow.com

    Is it worth for %20 commission i really dont know but it is still the most searched registrar, it increases inquries if not sales and you have no option to use it if you are not Domain King.

I agree what the heck is Afternic, Godaddy has spent probably a billion dollars advertising, Advertising GODADDY, change the name of Afternic, To Godaddy Market, I don’t know, something with Godaddy, let it run as it does, so you don’t shift people’s account, and payment info etc… a rebrand will only help sales, not hurt.

    1. This is a good point Mike. I think Afternic is in desperate need of a rebrand / facelift. The site is clunky and dated. I too would like to see them move on from the Afternic name to something more GoDaddy focused. While I’m dreaming, improve the functionality. For example, give me the ability to contact past offers after an offer period has expired. Allow more of a conversational email back and forth like Uniregistry has done so that I can revive past leads. I’ve sold names to old leads on Uniregistry just by being able to reach out months later.

      Anyway, I totally agree. GoDaddy recently gave their own site a facelift, they should do the same with Afternic. And changing the name, or putting “GoDaddy” on the site would likely increase buyer confidence as it’s a more recognizable name to those not in the industry.

  3. I have a different issue/question. I already have many Godaddy registered domains listed for sale at Afternic that gets them into the Godaddy registration path for prospective buyers. In the latest new layout of my Godaddy Domain Manager it is giving me an option to list my domain for sale with the estimated value right next to it- even those that are already at Afternic – so why would I need to list it for sale at both? Maybe I am missing something…

    1. That is a subject I have addressed with my GD rep many times over the last few years. It is a redundant addition to the domain manager. You can list directly through domain manager or directly with Afternic, but, if you list directly with Afternic like I do, their system has not yet tied in going the other way, so it looks like it is not yet listed. One day, maybe, when GD hires a teenage intern to fix it it might get done.

  4. For me, Afternic provides about 90% of my sales. I would assume most people think they are buying it from Godaddy. Especially on names where Appraised GD value is the same as my BIN price, which is about 80% of the time. Without Afternic, I would not be in business, so I am ok with the commission.

    Now I have the exact same portfolio and prices at Sedo, and have only sold one there in the last few years. So, for me, Afternic is about 100 times more effective than Sedo for some reason.

    My other 10% of sales come through a combo of Squadhelp and Efty landers. Brandbucket has gone south and is now almost useless, and I have never sold one at Brandpa (even with a $200,000 portfolio there)

    I am always looking for more exposure – the right exposure, and am happy to pay up for results.

  5. If the Godaddy site actually worked properly, I’d be a lot more enthusiastic about using them.

    Example I run into all the time, before giving up and only listing on DAN:
    “ Domain listing were not created. Due to some backend error we are not able to create the domain listings.” 🧐😔

  6. Totally agree. I’ve moved quite a few of my names with BINs to Afternic nameservers this year – actually have gotten more leads in one week than three months at DAN. Although my Afternic leads most often dry up, especially the ones with low starting bids. GoDaddy could wipe Efty, DAN, BB + clones off the map if Afternic were branded to GoDaddy; the site was updated and user friendly; and they were more democratic with tools, leads and data. Until then, I’ll spread my names around and ignore all the tire kickers.
