If you read this blog regularly you will probably notice two things. One, I say what I’m thinking and pretty much tell my story in a real way every day. I don’t pretend its everyone’s story, or think that mine is better or worse than anyone else’s. Its just mine and I don’t mind sharing it because I think some will find it entertaining or can relate to it. Two, I’m aware. I see things others may miss. I’m not talking details like spelling errors or managing tasks. I screw that up all the time. No. I’m aware of those around me. What they mean to me. Who is real. Who is fake. Who only wants things from me. Who needs me to help. Who has helped me.
This Mother’s day always reminds me who made me who I am and that’s my Mother. She didn’t pick the best time to have me as a Freshman in college. Raised me when the man that she was married to took her for granted. Drove me around the country letting me pursue my dreams. When my Dad left to find himself while I was in college, my Mom did the opposite and gave herself up so I could finish up. She gave the last penny out of her pocket to make sure I had what I needed. I, like many kids in the 70s and 80s, had a Father there, but never present. My Mom raised me. If you like me, thank her and my wife. I was raised and made by women. My story is probably not that special but my Mother is. She deserves more than one day to be celebrated. Gifts and money aren’t going to pay her back for her sacrifice. The only way to pay her back is to do the same thing for my daughter as she did for me. Also, to be a real man. To be a person of my word. To say thank you. Never take anything or anyone for granted. And be present in the lives of those that I care about. I don’t check the boxes every day but I try to most days.
Not all of us are blessed to still have our Mothers with us but if you do, don’t worry about the gifts. A simple hug and a big thank you will suffice. All those great things you have, from the spouse to the financial achievements, came from roots that your Mother planted. Just make sure to say thank you while you can.
