I don’t think I saw this on any blogs (I admit I don’t read many) a crazy story about how the malware WannaCry was halted simply by the registration of a domain name. If you aren’t familiar with WannaCry it was ransomware that took over your computer and asked you to send over bitcoin to release it. It spread to millions of computers around the world. A 22 year old hacker was scanning through the code and noticed a domain name with random characters and noticed it wasn’t registered. So for $10 he registered it to see what happened. Turned out the registration of the name was the built it killswitch. It was coded to look for that domain’s registration and when it was live it terminated.
