Self responsibility. I have turned into one of those old men that think that a lot of people have lost it. Everyone blames everyone else for their wrongdoing. Less and less I hear people saying. “I screwed up. I made a bad choice” Making a bad choice isn’t weak. It’s only bad if you didn’t put in the work to make a good decision. And that’s something nobody wants to admit. That they didn’t put in the work that would help lead to a better decision. “if this wouldn’t have happened or this guy wouldn’t have X then I wouldn’t be in this predicament” If you are effected by something/someone then you better pay attention. It has nothing to do with trust. It has to do with protecting yourself.
I tell my daughter, my employees, make the hard decisions and don’t worry about a bad result. Most of the time it is going to turn out fine because you did your homework and had all the information you needed try and make a call. If it goes sideways then try and figure out what info you were missing and what caused it to go bad. If its something you can’t control then leave it alone. You’ll get a positive next time. Weather is a perfect example. My nursery’s sales are greatly effected by weather. If a division misses their monthly numbers because it rained for 9 out of 30 days or was 95 degrees for 10 days of the month then I am not going to penalize them. Our annuals division used $25,000 less in propane because of the warm winter. The annuals division isn’t getting a bonus based on those savings, just as they don’t get dinged if we have the worst winter ever. A great month is a great month but I care more about things like scrap and overage in stock (aka grew too much).
I’ve found that attaching personal responsibility to things leads to better results. If I tell someone exactly what to do then it becomes MY plan. If things start going poorly then it becomes my problem. It was my plan and they more likely to bail because its not their idea, it was mine and its not working. When I tell them the end result I am looking for and let them plan it out they are more likely to fight for it when thing don’t go as planned. It’s theirs and they want it to succeed so they follow it all the way through. They take more pride in the process and the results. This isn’t just managers but everyone. Down to the smallest tasks. Once a person knows what to do then its easier to come up with a plan and get out of the way. Drop by every once in a while to discuss to progress and then discuss at the end. Hopefully each time the person gets better and better at their role and their decision making process. And unfortunately if someone continues to make bad decisions or blames everyone and everything else for things then we part ways.
And that’s how I feel about people that have no personal responsibility and always blame. I just part ways

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. I Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by me, Shane . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything I say is based on my own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or my opinion is correct. I hand choose my names but I am paid to make this list by the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good
I’m pretty sure a couple of those vegan names were discussed on Sherpa shows in the past .. i can almost hear you and Cyger laughing about them and repeating the “How do you know when you’re talking to a vegan?” joke! lol
Spot on.
I always liked the term unteachable. If someone learns they stay, if they turn out to be unteachable they get replaced. I’ve got one in my lawn business that won’t be back next year.
Shane, your blog is great! I’m appreciating your stories and your philosophy of life! But you’re killing me with these names, I’ve purchased about $2,000 of these names in the last 3 months. 😊
