Today’s lesson is on how to be greedy. I sold SocialGain dot com this week. A sale is always good. I like to have them as much as possible. There is nothing more exciting and a tad bit scary than getting the email “YOUR DOMAIN HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM AFTERNIC”. It means you sold something. You just hope you didn’t forget a zero. I sold social gain for $1888. I bought the name three years ago on a Godaddy auction. I figured I probably paid $150 or so for the name and figured it was an OK return. Except I paid $550. That’s just not a good return in domain investing. 3X my money is a good scalp but I’d like to be more in the 5X plus price range. I’m happy I am going to have $1500 in my account soon but no needles were moved. That all being said, moving my pricing down on my names to $2800 and $1800 have really increased the sales. I have been selling a name or so a week since. That price range isn’t getting me rich but its good cash flow and feeds my desire to buy more names.
On a side note. In order to make a better list each day I like to see what names readers clicked on. Originally I was surprised what the most popular names were. Over the years I’ve learned that there is definitely certain names that people like. I also thought it was the placement in the list and other than not being in the bottom “Other Names with Bids” section, it really doesn’t matter. For instance, this is the top clicked names in order of number of clicks. PalmCapital was the most clicked. I really thought Buzz Keeper would be the top but capital names are really hot right now. I was super surprised by 8XXXXX and the number of clicks. We get paid by people buying names so its in my best interest to list name that I think people will buy. Learning what names people click help in building a better list and leads to more sales. It also helps me learn what names do well at auction. Seeing the auction results from Travis’ daily list and building the list has really helped me become a better domain investor. Although not great as evidenced by my low pricing of Social Gain

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good
We adjust prices too. Always feel like the domain could have sold for more but cashflow is really important.
The click-through rates are interesting.
Wow, this is a really meta post today.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Shane — At Afternic, did you upgrade to Premium Promotion?[“If you want to improve your visibility, consider upgrading to Premium Promotion if you haven’t already.”] Thanks, Carl
