So my neighborhood was donated to the University of Illinois this past few months. “How does a neighborhood get donated?”. I live in a golf course community. I moved here because the covenants said no two houses can be the same and no fences. And because the golf course is absolutely beautiful and there won’t be any building on the course so it will stay that way. In short, it is a nice mix of people, homes, and plants. The only problem is the course in public and nobody plays golf anymore. Although the owners are multi millionaires and the lots so fairly well, they still lost a ton of money on the deal. They saw a tax opportunity and gave the golf course and most of the unsold lots to the University Of Illinois as a gift. In return the University vowed to actually improve the course and make it one of the top Championship courses in the country. Considering how nice it was I can’t wait to see what that means.
One of the first things they did has already made the neighborhood better. All the unsold lots and land were planted up with Sunflowers. Hundreds of acres. It is absolutely stunning. When I look out my second story window it looks fake. People are coming from all over town to take pictures and walk around it. They planted it for the beauty, for the birds, and to put some nutrients in the ground as they will probably put corn on it until they open those areas for sale. In the meantime its turned my decent view into a million dollar view. And I took a couple to for desk.
