There are two sides to making money. What you take in and your costs. I’m pretty good at keeping costs down. We run a pretty lean shop at the nursery but there are always things you can analyze and try and get cheaper. Two things at the nursery seemed high to me. Waste disposal and electricity. We were paying $1200 per dumpster to remove waste that couldn’t/shouldn’t be burned or composted. To the tune of $14K per year. We got a letter saying prices were going up so we asked for a meeting to figure out how we could get the price down. Turns out the problem was our dumpster was so big it needed a special truck to roll it up on. If we went with a dumpster 1/3 of the size that could be picked up with a smaller truck and automatically dumped they could come out every week for $180 a month. Yes. $180 month. Of course we switched. Huge savings. The electricity prices we first tried to attack by adding a bigger panel so we could have one meter instead of 3. Because they charge per meter in addition to kilowatts. That save a hundred or so a month. But then we talked to a solar company
Because we are a farm they can install a solar farm which allows them to produce solar above and beyond what we use at the nursery. They would pay for the complete installation and hookup. Make us pay them half of what we pay now directly to them and they get to keep all the solar sellbacks. In short. We have zero input costs and save $600 a month. Done. While not a lot of money its a total of $1500 a month savings which I put in to an automatic bagging machine. A machine that will take the place of the 3 guys I have bagging by hand one day a week. Now two can do it in a half day and do twice as much. Which will lead to better mulch and rock profits and those guys can do something that it more productive and profitable. All in all I think we can add $30K to the bottom line with the changes. Changes that should have taken place years ago but there are a million moving parts and you don’t realize you can get a better cheaper part until it breaks and its time to replace it. Here are today’s names. Make sure to click on the names to see the current price and to help DSAD continue writing each day.

Shane, I owned and operated a hotel for years. Once a year I went over every expense, from Insurance to electric. It’s amazing how cost’s can get out of hand! I tried to make it fun. 🙂
I agree. things have to be checked regularly. There are whole businesses built on people not checking
Great news about your solar farm! I would enjoy hearing more about this, and seeing some pictures! Is it a federal program that you qualified for (because you had an existing farm)? Many thanks! Cheers, Carl
