As a person that moved every four years when I was a kid I learned one thing when joining a new group. In order to be noticed you have to be known for something. Whether I knew it or not I had to build a new Shane Cultra brand each time I moved to a new neighborhood or school. If I didn’t I would simply get lost. One thing that was my go to things was a game called “Wall Ball”
The game was simple. You needed a racquetball and a wall. One player would throw the ball at the wall and the other players had one job. Catch the ball and throw it back at the wall. Here was the kicker. If you attempted to catch the ball and it hit your body and you didn’t catch it, i.e. hit the ground, you had to go touch the wall. That sounds pretty simple but there was one more rule. The other people could pick up the ball and throw it at you……hard. I added the “no heads” rule meaning they couldn’t throw it at your face or head but things happened when people throw a ball at a moving target.
When I would come to a new school one of the first thing I would say at recess is “you guys play wall ball?” I came in with some good skills. I had fakeouts that acted like I was going to catch it and I would let it pass, hitting the person behind me. I knew to zig zig like the arrow scene in Apocalypto when heading to the wall. And I always had a racquetball ready. I came to each school as the good athlete and the wall ball guy. But they knew me. Even though I had just moved there.
I have been creating my own brand ever since. Each time creating a new Shane. I have done the same thing here in Domain Investing. I am certainly not the best, the most talented, or the best known. But people know I exist. And when I talk to someone they know me, which makes negotiation or business deals easier. It also allows me to make a living in domain investing. And it all started by taking a couple welts in Wall Ball trying to make some friends. Here are today’s names. Click through to see the current price

At Westbury little league in H-town we used to call it spread eagle. Fun game.
RP
Ha. It would have been tough to go to a new school and say “Hey, you want to play a game called Spread Eagle?”
Good morning Shane. Thanks for the story.
Lebron James is probably the most physically gifted and has one of the highest basketball IQ’s ever but not the best or the greatest or whatever other superlative you choose. He does not have the win at all costs mentality. Had to learn how to finally get over the championship hump with help from Wade. Takes most defensive shifts off.
The best player ever along with his collegiate Olympic teammates beat NBA All-Star teams that included Magic, Isiah Thomas and others even before he stepped foot in the NBA. He was just 21. His age 25 season, he averaged 35 pts on 54% shooting while winning the defensive player of the year award. Oh, and he won the slam dunk contest that year too. This all before he won his 6 championships and 6 Finals MVP’s which most cite for his being the greatest.
Tony,
I was just playing. Jordan was simply the most driven and talented basketball player of all time. He would have found a way to beat Lebron, regardless of Lebron’s strengths and talents
