When we went to Kenya last year we met a young man named Rhonex Kipruto. He was in his last year of High School and his coach, the legendary Brother Colm O’Connell said that Rhonex would be his next great star. Looking at the young man he looked so small and young. I talked to him a while, exchanged instagram handles and I started to follow his career. Brother Colm said he wanted to keep him in the 5K and 10K and once he won an Olympic medal in 2020 he would start working on moving him up in distance.
Rhonex broke the world record for fastest 10K ever run on the roads. 26 min and 24 seconds. FOR A 10K. Not a 5K, a 10K. Unfortunately he didn’t get to run in the in the Olympics this year so they had to earn some money. He ran some of the biggest 10K and 10 miles around the world and of course won most of them. Yesterday he ran his first half marathon. I big move up in distance but still a good distance for him IMO. It went well. He broke the world record. Unfortunately 3 other people did as well and he came in third. 57 minutes and some change for 13 miles. That’s 4:23 per mile for 13 miles. I had my best race ever this year and ran 1:26. He ran 29 minutes faster than me. It was the fastest half marathon debut in history. I talked to him yesterday and he said he can go faster. I’m sure he can but man did he look like he was in an all out sprint.
I know most of you could care less about distance running but it doesn’t take a runner to appreciate someone that breaks the world record in anything. Meaning they are the best that has ever attempted the task. People come from around the world to find out why this reason of Kenya produces so many world champions. I have always known why. Success breeds success. This is the only dream of every child in the town. They live and see the best who have ever lived and know they too have a chance. It also helps they live at altitude and have no access to shitty food. All they do is run. Rhonex just happens to be the best from the town. Which means he’s one of the best in the world. And in my opinion will end up being the best marathon runner ever. At least until Iten produces the next star.
