Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Monday June 22nd, 2020

When I used to trade one of the hobbies of traders was to buy race horses. A lot of people don’t know but when you see a race called “Claiming” race you can actually put in a claim before the race for the amount of the claiming race. So if you see a race that says “Claiming $8000” you can buy that horse for $8K. The goal was to buy an 8, 10, or 20K horse and try and hope that horse wins. If they win they can move up to a race where the claim is for more. We’d look for horses dropping in price and hope the last few races could be fixed. So rather than bet $5K on a horse they would just put a claim on the horse and the prize regardless, is you get a horse. Of course you need to have a deal with a trainer to make sure that horse has a place to stay and train.

Where most people get killed is the monthly cost to feed, house, train, and medicate a horse. And that’s really expensive. It’s generally the same for a cheap claim or high priced horse. The main difference in the super expensive horse is the costly transportation costs and security. Yes they need to have a full time guard to keep some crazy person from injecting the horse. Gambling makes people do stupid stuff. Like buy a claiming horse.

I actually went in with my boss on a claimer but thankfully we were second claim and didn’t get it. The horse came in second to last and would have been a drain. Horseracing is a rich mans hobby. There are those that make money but its really just something to talk about. Horse owners are like vegans. You will know that they own horses in the first 5 minutes of talking to them. The money is in training. Its guaranteed monthly earnings but you do need to show some success to get a good stable. I’ve known several trainers over the years and while its a modest life, they all seem to love it. They love working with the animals and treat all their horses like family. But its still a business so they have to put their horses in claimers to keep the stable fresh and see if they can find the next diamond in the ruff. Aka pawn their trash off to wealthy business people who don’t know a damn thing about horses.

Quote of the Day: You try to do the best with what you’ve got and ignore everything else. That’s why horses get blinders in horse racing: You look at the horse next to you, and you lose a step” – Jimmy Iovine
