I’m producing a new television show coming out on December 12th. It’s called Champaign Ill. Its a story about rappers that were at the top of the rap world until the main guy dies at a party and the group becomes irrelevant. They end up having to move back to one of their parents house in Champaign IL, my home town. I used Champaign because its a town I know well. It was picked up by You Tube Red and will be featured as part of their new Original Series.
All of this is true except the part of me producing it and I didn’t create it. My town is an usual one in the fact that we are a relatively small college town but that town has brought a lot of entrepreneurship and creativity. We have two billionaires in Jimmy John the sandwich guy and Shad Khan the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Fulham and Wimbley Stadium. We have private Jets flying in and out of town every day. And we have millions of graduates that once called Champaign Urbana home. I am guessing one of the creators of the show did at one point and that’s where the idea came. Nobody’s seen anything but the trailer but the show is shot in Atlanta and there are no signs of Champaign in the thing except the name. I think they picked the name just so they could have the slogan Champagne to Champaign. Not sure if it will be popular but I know there will be a few people from Champaign watching it just to see how they portray us.
And of course I bought ChampaignILL.com and forwarded it to help them out. Maybe they’ll send me a shirt or let me be on the show. Here are today’s names. Click through to see the current price

I was stationed in Champaign Urbana while in the Air Force. I would follow the band Mistress around to all the bars – they almost made it big. I had a blast living there in the late 80’s early 90’s. The college town atmosphere for a kid in the Air Force was amazing and the people couldn’t be nicer. When I used my GI bill to go to college I was already back in Buffalo but I wished I could have gone to back to Champaign Urbana. Great place – nice people – I wish I was buying domains back then. I didn’t meet Shane – I don’t think? Maybe in a bar near the college and didn’t know it?
I moved here in 1995, actually grew up down down south. Ironically my kid headed towards you so our chances of meeting are now in your town 🙂
Shane,
CompareInsurance.com and comparephones.com will not change hands. They are at Tucows which qualifies them to still be renewed. The holder of these names lets them expire. They then run them up in auctions, renew them and then try to sell them afterwards at an inflated price. I have won other auctions from the same holder/owner and they always get renewed. I have been told by Go Daddy that this little trick will be ending soon. I’ll let you know when I have any updates.
Cheers
Good stuff, Ken. I won comparephones.com for $2,000 and it seemed like someone was playing with my proxy bid up to the end. It ended at my max bid and I wonder if that’s a coincidence. I’ll update on here if I end up with it.
Tony,
Good luck and please do keep us updated
