My daughter needed to get back to Syracuse and we figured the best way to get here there was by car. So we drove across half the country and to avoid a plane ride. Covid tests before we leave and off we go. We did it in a day since its only an 11 hour drive minus an hour lost to time change. I couldn’t believe how open Indiana and Ohio were. Restaurants we open and people were eating at tables inside just like normal. They were spaced but it looked like any lunch crowd where people didn’t want to sit right next to a stranger. And the line was socially spaced but it was long. I had a good mask on but no way in the world we eating inside. We got our food and kept rolling.
As we rolled into NY my daughter was more worried about me saying something stupid to her roommates than anything else. I told her I would only answer questions and wouldn’t talk otherwise. One of the girls staying with her is her friend and she’s a pro runner. She set the American record for fastest debut marathon for someone under 25 and I was so proud of her but I just had to sit there and listen. Imagine that. Me. Listening. But you do things for your daughter. You drive them across the country. Let them choose all the music. Stop to pee 12 times (that actually was me with all the coffee). And be quiet around roommates. If that’s not love, what is?
And finally. Oh, what a year it’s been. All I can say is take the year and learn. No different than every year. The losses were incredibly painful and the positives were some of the best positives I’ve ever had. . I will not pretend to guess what 2021 will offer but I hope to be here every day telling it from my viewpoint. Today I reflect and relax (if we don’t get the expected ice storm)
