I can’t put into words what a difficult time we had coming home from Europe on Sunday. But I am going to try anyway. We came home Sunday night with a direct flight from Amsterdam to Chicago. Chicago weather Monday was pretty rough so they had to divert flights. We end up in Dallas and wait all day Monday sitting in the airport waiting for a flight to leave. 10 hours later they finally cancel it. Chicago still won’t allow other flights in so we have no choice but to spend the night in Dallas and try and get a flight out Tuesday. That night they automatically book us on a flight to Montana Tuesday morning and then to Chicago. We give Montana a big “Nope” and book a flight to Grand Rapids with a flight to follow to Chicago. We make it to Grand Rapids.
What doesn’t make it is my wife’s wallet. She left it in the hotel in Dallas. You know what else was never with us? Our luggage. TSA won’t take it off the plane so it flew around on the plane without us with it eventually making it to Chicago. We didn’t know it then but it would actually beat us by a day. So we’re in Grand Rapids ready to go to Chicago and they say they have locked down the runways in Chicago. Bomb scare? Bad weather? Nope. Weather was so bad the day before that all the flights were delayed have now all come in and there’s no space for flights or on the runway. There is a four hour hold for new planes coming in. So we wait four hours. You know what set in in those four hours? Bad weather.
So they cancel all but two flights out of Grand Rapids. Fortunately ours is one of the two still on but 10:30 Am becomes a 1 pm, then a 2pm, then a 4 pm, and then a big maybe. We decide to cancel it and rent a car. I call and they have a few cars left. By the time I get there they have zero. Shit. So I try and get an Uber. It’s a three hour ride and its charged at $165. I’m willing to pay that. But Uber has this stupid system where they don’t show the driver the route or the fee. So everyone kept taking the ride but when they finally see the route they all basically say “Hell No”. It’s a flawed system for long distance rides. They keep taking the rides and canceling and finally I had to pay a cancelation fee for the trip because I couldn’t keep having people take it and cancel it. So we decide to go back in to the airport and see if the flights are officially canceled.
As we get back in we notice they are announcing that the flights were back on and instead of leaving at 8 pm they were boarding now at 6 pm. We run and to make the plane. Dong. That’s the sound the boarding pass made. Yeah. The cancelation went through immediately. Not in 3 hours like they had told us. We’re not on the flight. I was trying not to scream at someone. I had been traveling for three days and just wanted to get home. The thought of staying another hotel with no clothes and having to travel again on Wednesday was awful.
The agent then said “here you go” There is plenty of room on the flight across the way there. I booked you three tickets and they are boarding now. We got on the plane and sat back like we were taking a limo ride. We got to Chicago and it only took an hour to find our luggage in the sea of luggage that had been brought from all the canceled flights. Some people had to wait 3 and 4 hours. All we had to do was drive home 3 hours and we were home a little after midnight.
Easy peasy. 50 plus hours of travel to get home from Europe. Literally trains, planes, and automobiles. We took all of those several times. But I’m home, exhausted but home. Back to plants and domains Here are today’s domains. Hope you find a good one. Click to see the latest price

My goodness what an awful trip home. I’ve been through something similar once where I spent 3 days sleeping at an airport. The bad thing for me was the flights that kept getting canceled were on my way to boot camp for the marines, and when I finally arrived they do sleep deprivation for the first 3 days or so. I basically was a zombie going 6 days with very little sleep.
They owe you a voucher for a trip to st louis. 🙂
