I took the afternoon off to go to my grandfather’s birthday. What’s special about this is he’s 94 and my grandmother is 95 who was also there. I also have another grandmother that’s 92 and both my parents. I don’t take any of this for granted. A few years ago I started spending some more time with my grandfather just to talk. He told me more stories than all the 90 years before. He just seemed ready. He wasn’t a story teller prior to that but I felt he decided it was ok to let it all out. And he did. Unfortunately those days are over.
His health is just fine but he stares a lot more than he talks. The stories may be there but they are now buried deep in his mind. My grandmother is great but at 95 she just seems tired. She smiles a little less often and her wit, which was legendary, comes out a little less than it did. But they’re there. Not the same people they were. A childlike form. But there. They look at me, still know who I am but I am not sure if who my grandfather associates me with, is really me. But it doesn’t matter. Every birthday party I get with them brings the large family together. To bring back memories and conversation we wouldn’t have had without them at the center. We’ve said that this could be the last birthday for 10 years yet here we are once again. It can’t go on forever but as good as they looked it could go on for another 10 years. Just not sure they mentally will be with us and if they are, I’m not sure if that’s living or just existing. Either way I’m grateful for another amazing day with family. I realize not everyone gets that chance and would do anything for a few more days with their parents and grandparents and I never take that for granted. Here are today’s names. Great post Shane – and a great reminder. You are 100% on the spot Shane! Too easy to be “too busy”, yet these are the moments that truly take life to where it should be. We need to cherish every opportunity that we can; they will run out eventually.
Very best wishes from stormy Ireland and Happy St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th.
