So evidently doctors start caring about you when you turn 50. In the US, health care is pretty much reactionary. You come in when you get sick. Heaven forbid you get a physical because if you try, they schedule you out 6 months because they are too busy being reactionary . But turn 50 and now they start paying attention. Not real attention but enough they want you to get a couple things checked. For men its your ass with a slight hint of cholesterol . They also want you to get a shingles shot.
I ran my last big race of the year and it was 8 degrees out so I figured it was a good time to go get my shots. Nobody was shopping. When I say shopping, you can now get most of your shots for free or cheap at Pharmacies, Sam’s or Costo. I asked the guy if I could get my shots and he was a little more excited than I wanted. I asked for the flu shot but he noticed I was 50 and said I might as well get the Shingles shot. I asked the side effects and he said it was just a little more soreness and this. This being a sheet with the rest of the side effects. Pretty much all of them being flu like symptoms. Which should be fine because I am getting a flu shot right?
I am bundled up for 8 degrees so as he asked to see my shoulder I realize I am going to have to take off four layers. He sees me undressing and quickly pulls the curtain because he thinks he thinks I may go full buck naked at the rate I’m taking off stuff. I get the flu shot and I can barely tell he even poked me. But then the shingles shot came out. The needle was longer than my bicep. I told him that jokingly I needed bigger arms and he let me know its going in my shoulder so we just have to have it stop short of my heart. It barely did. I’ve had a ton of shots for African travel over the last few years so I know a good shot and this bad boy was a good shot. It was a quick poke but it was a deep poke. My shoulder was instantly sore. But I have had sore shoulder from Hep shots so I figured it would go away.
Being the spoiled guy I am I went straight to my weekly physical massage and told him to take it easy on the shoulders because I just had shots and had been shoveling snow. He heeded my advice and worked my back, chest and legs. But even those seemed a little sore. Was I getting flu like symptoms? As the day wore on my body was absolute toast. It felt like someone dropped me out of a moving car. I couldn’t sleep in any position for longer than 10 minutes. I was good for a few minutes and then the dull aching set in. Flip or turn and do it again. All night. Then I got the sweats. Didn’t feel too bad but I was sweating like a whore in church. My wife told me “Welcome to the club” By the time I woke up I felt like I was in a rodeo and came in last place. I was beat and as sore as I’ve ever been. And I do physical work for a living. I’m not a softie who looks at a computer all day and has bread for a body. But I felt like one who had decided to hit the gym for the first time in 10 years.
Evidently getting shingles is 40 times worse than how I felt this morning. I am glad I got the shot (I have one more). No way I want to be 40 times worse. Last night I felt better, not great, but much better. I am wondering if the cause of getting old isn’t years, its that they give you a shot that ages you like a motherfucker. I felt like a 30 year old until I got that thing.

You had me until homeopathic. I will definitely not take any needle presented to me from now on. As for homeopathy, I eat very well and live a clean lifestyle, and supplement with certain things I think I’m missing in my diet. I cure almost everything with rest and rehab.
