I wanted to start off by apologizing to the owner of JHM.com. It’s at auction at Namejet and there are no issues at all. Turns out the person emailing me pretending to be the owner wasn’t actually the owner. Another frontrunner trying to sell a domain he/she didn’t own. Owners can’t stop this type of thing and it hurts both them and Namejet. I made it worse with my article when I was trying to make it better. Happens to me all the time and the reason nobody likes me except my wife, Mom and 7 other people 🙂
It was another incredible month at the nursery with people still improving their landscapes and gardens at record rates. I can’t predict what next year will look like but half my customers are new and my feeling is a lot of them are going to like the results and come back. Many are buying trees and shrubs but even more are buying annuals, succulents, and mums. Things that get planted every year. And they’ll tell their friends, etc. I’m also adding a ton more greenhouse and irrigation to allow me to grow more of my own product which will help me make more money, even if its on less sales.
That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned. Building the marketplace is the most important part. Once that’s built you can improve your profits in several different ways. The key is you have the customers. For me its growing it myself. I sell approximately 3000 boxwoods at $39.95 a year. I am paying $16 plus shipping if I buy them from someone. That’s not too bad of a margin for a retail store. But I have 6000 boxwoods ready for next year that I grew from both cuttings or one gallon plants The cuttings is a time thing. I took the cuttings 6 years ago. They only cost me time. I figure I have about $4 in them when you count all the touches, pots, and dirt. Hard to measure time. In the upgrades. I bought the one gallon for $4.50 delivered and have another 4 in each for materials and planting. It takes a season and a half to get to selling size. So maybe $8-8.50 in each. So in general I am going to make an extra 25,000 this year by growing it myself. Which doesn’t sound like a tremendous amount but I have 500 different plants that I can do that with. Some plants I can do that in even bigger quantities and higher margins. Creating the products is the the easiest, or quickest way to profits but it provides the most if you can do it.
In short, create the market place with great inventory and prices. Then start making your own inventory. It’s why the big grocery stores have their own brand of goods. Its much better profits. And in my business having it made by the seller makes it sound better, fresher, and more local which is a bonus. And all this just takes a decade or two to create. Easy Peasy

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
They say money doesn’t grow on trees, but it grows on shrubs?
Did you buy BeefAir.com ? I think it would make a great brand for environmental awareness (cow farts contribute to ozone depletion) or for a service like Amazon Prime . . .Rib .
